Sport Shorts The Pine Barrens Golf Academy will be held at the Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson throughout the season from March through October. The classes will be for women, juniors and men. All aspects of the game will be covered. The clinics will be filled based on ability of the players. For more information, contact the Pro Shop at (732) 776-9940. The following are the results of the Nick "the Quick" Werkman All-American Action Clinic at the McAuliffe School in Jackson. Anthony Ranaudo won the boys’ hotshot competition with 42 points, followed by Connor Wegner (38), Joe Zimmerman (37), Alfred Brenner (36) and James Peterson (33). Zimmerman won the foul-shooting competition, shooting 10-for-10, followed by Wegner (9-10), Ranaudo (8-10), Brenner (7-10) and Jeremy Briel (6-10). Ranaudo was named the camp’s MVP. The Howell South Little League will hold its second and final registration for the spring 2002 season from 8-10 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Ramtown Elementary School, Ramtown-Greenville Road. All players who will be between the ages of 6 and 16 as of July 31 are eligible. All new players are required to furnish a copy of their birth certificate. The registration fee is $60 for one child, $50 for a second, $40 for a third. Tee-ball costs $25 per child. A $75 volunteer fee, which is refundable, and a per-family fund-raising obligation also will be assessed. In addition, tickets for a May Lakewood BlueClaws game will be sold. Distance standouts Joe Pellegrino of Marlboro, a junior, and sophomore Justin Mandzik of Howell are returning veterans. Incoming freshmen are Brandon Portelli of Marlboro, a 400 hurdles standout, who is running the middle distances with Pellegrino and Mandzik, and Greg Ostrowicki, a Howell grad, who is going to be a multi-event performer for the Scarlet Knights. Ostrowicki was a high jump champion at Howell. The Pinelanders Youth Soccer Club, based in Howell, is sponsoring a NJYS Level F coaching license class on Feb. 15 and 16. Cost for the course is $30. Tighe Park (formerly Liberty Oak Park), Freehold Township, in the activity building. Fees are $45 per child with a maximum of $80 per family. The Jersey Nightmare, a Central Jersey-based girls fastpitch softball organization, is holding open tryouts to complete their 12U (born 1989 or later) roster on Jan. 17 and 19 for the 2002 season.
