FAHERTY CHAHALIS, 60, of Brick, died Nov. 21 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born and raised in Washing-ton Heights, N.Y., she moved to the shore in 1972, residing in Jackson for 23 years before moving to Brick. Mrs. Chahalis was a bookkeeper for the Armour S. Hulsart Co., Wall. Surviving are her husband of 37 years, James Chahalis; a son, James Chahalis of Old Bridge; two daughters, Donna Celli of Florham Park and Debby Hulsart of Brielle; a brother, Martin Faherty of Garrison, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Rose Conlin of Mahopac, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren. Interment took place at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Box 3170, Union 07083. DOMINICK A. "DON" SGRO, 67, of Lakewood, died Dec. 7 at home. Born in Hackensack, he lived there and in Mahwah before moving to Lakewood. He was a vice principal at Northern Valley Regional High School, Demarest, Old Tappan, for 37 years, retiring in 2000. He graduated the University of Iowa where he was a member of the Hawkeye Club and the Iowa Letterman’s Club. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Lake Church, Lakewood; the New Jersey Principal’s Association; the New Jersey Education Association; Bergen County Coaches Association; New Jersey High School Umpires Association; and the Mentor of the Safe Rides Program. Surviving are his wife, Cecilia Gillen Sgro of Lakewood; a daughter, Maureen C. MacDonald; two sons, Jeffrey T. and Christopher F. Sgro; and two grandchildren. A Mass was offered at Holy Family Church, Lakewood. Interment was in St. Mary of the Lake Mausoleum, Lakewood. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Father Flanagan’s Boys Home, 138th and West Dodge Road, Boys Towns, NE 68010. ANGEL M. POMALES SR., 57, of Lakewood, died Dec. 7 in Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, and lived in New York before moving to Lakewood many years ago. He was a truck driver for Stanley Products for the past three years. Surviving are a son, Angel Pomales of York, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Modesta and John Ortiz of York, Pa.; two brothers, Louis and Hector Pomales, both of Lakewood; a step-sister, Gloria Rodriguez of New York; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A private cremation was held. LOUIS R. KOVACS, 80, of Lakewood, died Dec. 10 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was born in Edgewater and had lived in West New York before moving to Lakewood 10 years ago. Mr. Kovacs was a firefighter for the West New York Fire Department where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters and a member of the West New York Fire Department Relief Association. Mr. Kovacs served in the U.S. Army during WWII, attaining the rank of T-5. He was a member of the 160th General Hospital Corp. He was predeceased by his parents, John Kovacs and Anna Majovski. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Marie DiGiacco Kovacs; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven L. and Kathy Kovacs of Leonardo; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Robert Figgers of Maspeth, New York; a brother, Rudy Kovacs of Sayreville; a sister, Anna Rosemond of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Interment was in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. FRANK WILLIAM ZAVECKAS JR., 58, of Jackson, died Dec. 14 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was born in Perth Amboy and had lived in Blackwood before moving to Jackson Township three years ago. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967. He was employed as a warehouseman for Webcraft, North Brunswick, before his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Gloucester. Surviving are his wife, Rita Cilurso Zaveckas; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank III and Kristy of Gloucester; his mother, Louise A. Werder Zaveckas of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Lois Yarina of Virginia Beach, Mary Lou Zaveckas of Jackson Township, and Verna A. Varbato of Rochester, N.Y.; and a granddaughter. Services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Interment was in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. |
