Jackson to be discussed
Election proceedings in A meeting to discuss whether Jackson residents should directly elect a mayor will take place on June 25 at 8 p.m. at the Jackson Elks Club, East Veterans High-way. The discussion will include the benefits of allowing the direct election of the mayor by the people of Jackson; the creation of six ward council members and three at-large council members; nonpartisan elections in May; and an election every two years for four-year terms. Howell Recreation Dept. sets summer bus trips The Howell Department of Recreation is offering summer bus trips to New York City Seaport, July 12, $23 per person; Atlantic City, Aug. 9, $16 per person with $10 back in coins; Baltimore Inner Harbor, Aug. 16, $29.50 per person; Grounds for Sculpture, $10 adults, $9 senior/student, $6 children 12 and under. All trips will depart from the Howell Recreation Building, Preventorium Road. Details: (732) 938-4500, ext. 2501. ‘Spirit Award’ to honor those who help disabled The Lakewood Township Committee will present an "ADA Spirit Award" to the past and present boards of trustees of the Four Seasons adult community on June 25 at the Four Seasons community center, Shorrock Road, at 7 p.m. The award is given in recognition of their exemplary efforts to make the public areas within their community accessible to all their residents and guests and for providing access to the amenities within the public areas in the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Township Committee honors recipients on the basis of recommendations by the Lakewood Township ADA Compliance Committee. Candidate recipients include any private or public organization or business offering services in Lakewood which strives to maximize accessibility for all, especially if they extend themselves voluntarily beyond the letter of the law. Anyone wishing to nominate their organization or business or one which has shown such effort to them or to attend the event at Four Seasons must make prior arrangements through the Township Manager’s office at (732) 364-2500, Ext. 5283, 5203 or 5204. Gymnastics for boys and girls offered in summer The Lakewood Community School Summer Recreation Program will include six-week instructional gymnastics program for boys and girl ages 3-13 on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays 4-7 p.m. from July 1 through Aug. 6 at the Lakewood High School gym, 855 Somerset Ave. Fees are $35 for each class taken per week. Details: (732) 905-3685. Register now for ‘Fun Camp’ in Lakewood Registration is now in progress for Lakewood’s annual Fun Camp at Pine Park for children ages 3-8. Camp meets 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday from July 1 to Aug. 8. Available to nonresidents as well as residents, the camp is staffed by certified teachers and includes lunches, special events, arts and crafts, T-shirts for each participant and more. Matta, Lakewood’s recreation director, announced seven playground programs with free lunches will be available to all Lakewood children ages 6-15, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 1 through Aug. 15. Located throughout the township, all playgrounds are staffed with certified teachers and activities include, arts and crafts, barbecues, special events, contests and tournaments. Golf clinic available at Lakewood County Club A six-session instructional golf clinic, held at the Lakewood Country Club driving range, will commence on Tuesdays, July 1 and Thursdays, July 3. New Egypt Elks to hold Flag Day services The New Egypt Elks No. 2457 will be holding its annual Flag Day Services, June 24 at Beverly National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Services this year will be hosted by Edgewater Park Lodge. Dancing school’s 36th anniversary recital set The students of the Barbara Hartl School of Dancing will perform the 36th anniversary dance recital of the school June 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lakewood High School auditorium, 855 Somerset Ave. The show will consist of 20 numbers learned by the students between the ages of 3 and adult. All phases of dancing will be performed. The recital is choreographed and directed by Barbara Hartl-Renna, a former Radio City Music Hall Rockette who has been teaching dance in Lakewood for 36 years. Photography on display at Jackson library The Jackson library will have photography on display for the month of June by a young Ocean County artist, Erin K. Delucia. Featured will be photos of Asbury Park as it looks today. DeLucia has been documenting Asbury Park for a number of years. ‘Kids Kapers’ summer program in Lakewood The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation is conducting a Kids Kapers program this summer. This program will be held at Beach Complex, Ocean County Park, Lakewood, June 23-26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fee is $20 per child. Children will play games and enjoy outdoor fun.
