Sport Shorts At the recently held scholarship awards night at Jackson Memorial High School, Nicole Montegary and Christopher Sweitzer received the Don Connor Memorial Scholarship award. Named after former athletic director Don Connor, 44 awards have been given to gradating student/athletes in the 16 years since his passing. Both Nicole and Christopher are members of the National Honor Society. Nicole participated in soccer, and indoor and outdoor track, while Christopher played soccer and baseball. The Lakewood Summer Recreation Program will include a youth track program from June 30-July 23, under the direction of the high school varsity coach. The program is open to boys and girls ages 9 and under, 10-11, 12-12, and is held at the high school track on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. Registration is set for June 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the track. The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will be conducting a basketball program for children ages 5-8 this summer. Patriots County Park in Jackson will host a session on Tuesdays from July 22-Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to noon. The fee for this program is $12. Advance paid registration is required. The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will be conducting golf lessons for ages 16 and over this summer. The lesson will include fundamentals of the swing, short game, putting, rules and etiquette. Please bring a 5-iron to the first class. All classes will be held, rain or shine, at the golf area of Ocean County Park. Session one will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays (June 24-July 16) from 8-9 a.m., 9:15-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m., 6-7 p.m., and 7-8 p.m. Session two will run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (July 22-Aug. 13) from 8-9 a.m., 9:15-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m., 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. The fee is $30 per person. The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will be conducting a smart sports skills program this summer at Beaver Dam Park in Point Pleasant from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, July 1-15. Fee is $9 per child. The class will emphasize skill development and coordination as young children begin to master a number of different sports. Sports will include soccer, T-ball, tennis and basketball. Advance paid registration is required. The following are the results of the Westlake Ladies Golf Association’s match play vs. par outing June 6. In the 18-hole competition, Pat Hanlon won the A flight at plus 6, followed by Saralee Surett (plus 4) and Rose Mintz (plus 3). Jeanne Chrabaszcz won the B flight at plus 4, followed by Mary Ho Scotese and Pat Borton (both plus 3). Liz Druboff won the C flight at plus 3 followed by Natalie Bindler (plus 2) and Mary Ann Plesniak (plus 2). In the nine-hole competition, Alba Ramos won the A flight with a 31, followed by Aileen Kershner (37), Genny Petersen (37) and Flo Kangos (39). Gloria Harbour won the B flight with 35, followed by Lorraine Schneider (40), Barbara Tafro (41) and Beth Deardorff (43). |
