Jackson native earns awards for teaching

Cheryl Mitchell DiMartino, a 1981 Jackson Memorial High School graduate, has been honored for her innovative and creative techniques in teaching. DiMartino moved to Las Vegas in 1985 and graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in education and a master’s in administration.

The Fulbright Memorial Foundation selected her as a distinguished United States educational ambassador from Nevada. The foundation also paid for her to travel and study in Japan for three weeks. This opportunity allowed her to enrich the lives of her students, community and state. She also traveled back to her hometown of Jackson to give a presentation about Japan to fourth grade pupils at the Switlik School.

Days after returning from Japan, DiMartino was honored with the Milken National Educator Award. The Milken Family Foundation selected her as one of the top 100 educators in the nation and she received a monetary award of $25,000 given to her at a surprise assembly at the C.P. Squires Elementary School in Las Vegas.
