The Jackson U9 Hurricanes won the U.S. Amateur Baseball Championship recently. Out of the 23 U9 teams from Ocean, Monmouth, and Middlesex counties, it came down to two Jackson teams vying for the championship. Through the first four innings it looked like it was going to be a back-and-forth battle between the Jackson Hurricanes and the Jackson Bobcats. Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bobcats were ahead 5-4, with timely hitting by Eddie Guippone, Matt Thaiss, Joe Ogren, Adam King, Mike Folk, Vincent Russo, and Keith Jennings. The Hurricanes scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good and to secure the victory. Strong pitching by Mike Folk, Joe Ogren, Eddie Guippone, and Keith Jennings held the Bobcats to only five runs over six innings. A strong defense led by Chris Taggart, James Lee, Steven McConnville, Ryan Schulte and Jimmy Sapio helped to clinch the title. The Jackson Hurricanes finished the regular season with a 7-2 record. En route to the playoffs, the Hurricanes defeated Lacey Lightning, 7-6, Marlboro Gold, 7-3, and Ocean North 4-3. The Jackson Hurricanes’ overall record was 11-2.
