Veterans retire old flags at flag burning ceremony Veterans retire old flags Veterans organizations from throughout Ocean County are planning a flag burning ceremony for 2 p.m. June 13 at Veterans Park, Berkeley Township. This ceremony will provide a venue for worn and torn American flags to be disposed of properly. The Navy Seabee Veterans of America (Island X-2 Lakehurst) have joined with members of area Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion, fire departments and the Ocean County Veterans Service Bureau in sponsoring this program. "Ocean County in the past few years has collected thousands of worn flags from residents," said Freeholder Gerry P. Little, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Veterans Service Bureau. "We know that many people have flags that may be tattered and aged. This is a wonderful opportunity to join with our veterans in a ceremony to dispose of these flags the right way." Participants will have the opportunity to purchase new flags at the ceremony. Information on proper handling and displaying of the American flag will be provided. Anyone interested in participating or learning more about this ceremony should call (732) 818-1648. "We encourage our residents to participate in this event," Little said. "And, we commend the Seabees and the veterans organizations for hosting this ceremony in honor of Flag Day." Golf outing to raise funds for shelter animals The Jersey Shore Animal Center, Brick, will hold its third annual golf outing on June 21 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Lakewood. The format will be California Scramble. A foursome will play the best drive and then each player’s own ball into the cup, with the Calloway system for scoring; no handicap cards. The fee is $185 per player, $700 per foursome, and includes barbecue lunch at noon followed by golf at 1 p.m. An open bar, dinner, awards ceremony, raffle and auction will be held from 5-7 p.m. Refreshment carts will be available throughout the event. Proceeds will benefit the private, nonprofit animal shelter which cares for unwanted, abused, abandoned and sick animals. The shelter also takes animals to visit nursing homes weekly as part of its Pet Therapy program, and works with other community groups to help people in need. For more information, call the Jersey Shore Animal Center, (732) 920-1600. |
