School board member appreciates support from voters I would like to thank all of the good people in Jackson who voted to return Linda Lackay and me to the Jackson Board of Education. Our sense of duty, commitment and purpose grows as we continue working to improve our schools in Jackson. I have not lost any of the vigor or sense of purpose that is needed to move our district forward and upward. How far we have come! I ran out of a sense of duty mixed with real affection for our school district. It must be run from the heart as well as with the mind. I take this opportunity to remind the voters that school board candidates who use information that is nothing but rumor, so as to frighten the voter, should never represent the children, parents and taxpayers of Jackson on any board of education. Defeated candidate Sal Duscio states that the new Jackson high school was planned to become and will become a regional school. It will not be a regional school. What he calls a "prediction" is nothing more than pandering to the fears of the uninformed. He also questions the veracity of our claim that our schools are overcrowded because of the high, constant and rapid influx of new students into our district. I ask, "Has anyone not seen the countless number of homes that keep going up in Jackson?" Someone should wake up Mr. Duscio to tell him that Dewey did not defeat Truman and that Truman is no longer our President. I do not dislike Mr. Duscio, he is a nice enough person, but so is my Aunt Rose, but he does not belong, with his retrograde ideas, on a board that directs a community of educators and learners. I reserve comments about whether my Aunt Rose belongs on a board of education or not. When I graduated with the first graduating class of Jackson in 1966, our class was made up of just over 220 students. Now we are past 500 students. By the way, Mr. Duscio states that "yes, in time, Jackson will fill this new high school." Mr. Duscio, you have made our point. If America is great it is because its families and schools are great. Let us support them both in Jackson by providing schools about which we can all be proud. Our children deserve nothing less. Gus Acevedo Jackson |
