Century 21 Action Plus Realty has announced several winners of its locally sponsored Home Run Derbies held in Howell and Jackson. Recently, Century 21 Action Plus sponsored three separate Home Run Derbies giving local youths the opportunity to compete for charity and/or the grand prize of tickets, airfare and accommodations for two, to the 2004 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, July 12. Events in Howell included Century 21 Action Plus’ participation in the North Howell Youth Sports Association’s (NHYSA) "2004 Sports Challenge for Charity." The NHYSA hosted a May 22 charitable event that included a full day of baseball, soccer and football competitions. All proceeds raised from the player donations for each activity were donated to two North Howell families who both have children battling brain cancer. Century 21 Action Plus sponsored the Baseball Sector or Home Run Derby event of the day. More than 150 township youths from ages 5-17 competed to earn the title of "Top Home Run Hitter" by hitting the most home runs in a 10-out series. After a tough competition, 8-year-old Craig Russo swung his way to the win and took the title by hitting a total of nine home runs. Another event was hosted by the Howell South Little League and sponsored by Action Plus Realty June 19 at the Deerwood Field in Ramtown. Players ages 9-13 from the Howell South Little League competed for their league’s ultimate title and grand prize. After a tough competition, 12-year-old Ryan Weber, of the South’s major league division, was named the home run derby winner after scoring a cumulative grand total of 14 home runs in the four-round rally. The Jackson Jaguars Baseball Parents Club also hosted a derby June 19. This fund-raiser was open to all Jackson Memorial High School Students and the current middle school teams. Although trophies were awarded to all top sluggers in every competing age category, the baseball club decided to bestow its grand prize to charity and give one special young man from the "Oceans of Love" cancer foundation its Action Plus sponsored prize of a trip to the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby. The title of grand champion and largest trophy went to 15-year-old athlete Carl LaFaso for his eight home runs in the final round. |
