George "Sunny" Kavchak Jr.

Mr. Kavchak, 64, of Enosburg, Vt., formerly of Monmouth and Ocean counties, died June 18 at home. Born and raised in Englishtown, he was a longtime resident of Freehold and had lived in Lakewood for 10 years before moving to Vermont to be a gentleman farmer. Prior to retiring in order to start his own business, he was employed for many years by Worthington Diagnostics, Freehold Township. In the early 1980s, he began Lincoln Heating and Cooling, located in Lakewood, and continued to do sidework for the company while in Vermont. A U.S. Army veteran, he also served in the New Jersey National Guard and was a former member of the East Freehold Fire Company, as well as the Lions Club, the Exchange Club and the Sunrise Optimist Club, all of Freehold. He was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Gene Schoen and Robert Swallick. Surviving are his parents, George Sr. and Catherine Quinlan Kavchak of St. Albans, Vt.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Tamara and Jim Conine of New Kingston, N.Y., Tracy and David Albrecht of Berlin, Md., and Lorelei and H. Scott Mount of Freehold; two sisters, Barbara Schoen of Milton, Vt., and Kathleen Swallick of St. Albans; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; his first wife and the mother of his daughters, Patricia Smith of Freehold; his second wife, Prudence Helwig Kavchak of Enosburg; a nephew and his wife, Scott and Helen Schoen of Jackson; and longtime friend John Standowski (and family) of Jackson. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. on Aug. 10 at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown. Spears Funeral Home, Enosburg, was in charge of arrangements in Vermont.

Madeline G. Howell

Mrs. Howell, 85, of West Long Branch, died July 20 at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Woodbury, Conn., she resided in Eatontown prior to moving to West Long Branch five years ago. She was a retired employee at Baldanza Bakery, Long Branch. She was a parishioner at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 2140, Long Branch, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the West Long Branch Seniors. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Clementi in 1973; and a daughter, Madeline Hussey in 1995. She is survived by her husband, Walter Howell; five sons, Walter and Victor Clementi, both of Jackson; Frank Clementi and Walter Howell Jr., both of Eatontown; and John Clementi of Ocean Township; four daughters, Patricia Wenzel of the Lincroft section of Middletown, Kathleen Clementi and Patricia Riggi, both of Long Branch, and Rosanne Steets of West Long Branch; 26 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Dorothea’s Church. Interment was at Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. Kevin R. Boyle

Mr. Boyle, 44, of Neptune died July 22 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Long Branch, he resided in West Long Branch and Ocean Grove prior to moving to Neptune five years ago. Mr. Boyle was a fire inspector at Allied Fire and Safety Co., Oakhurst section of Ocean Township. He was an avid sportsman and belonged to several local softball, bowling and dart leagues. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Boyle, in 2001. He is survived by his fiancée Michelle Larsen; his mother, Phyllis Ward Boyle of Tinton Falls; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah and Frank Melicharek of Bordentown, Janice and Roger Stewart of Ocean, Lois and John Strain of Belmar, and Colleen and Gerard Crawford of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at The First Presbyterian Church, Long Branch. Interment was at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. The Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, was in charge of arrangements.

John P. McGough

Mr. McGough, 67, of Freehold Township, died July 28 at St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived there before moving in 1964 to Freehold Township, where he was a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church. A sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, he was a former coach for both the Freehold Township Little League and the Freehold Township Parks and Recreation Department. He was predeceased in 1968 by a son, John Patrick McGough. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ann Marie McGough; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. James J. and Jacqueline McGough of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Thomas M. McGough of Howell, and William J. and Quan D. McGough of Freehold; four daughters and a son-in-law, Dr. Eileen McGough of Freehold, and Susan McGough, Donna M. McGough, and Dianne and Charles Famulare, all of Freehold Township; a brother, James A. McGough of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; two sisters, Kathleen Grant of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., and Virginia Victor of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Laubach Gerhard

Mrs. Gerhard, 76, of South River died July 13 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. Surviving are a daughter, Deborah of South River; a son, Donald of Clark Summitt, Pa.; a brother, Edwin of the Parlin section of Sayreville; and a sister, Cristel Smith of Lakewood. Services were held at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin. Interment was in Cloverleaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge.
