Project completion draws near

HOWELL — Five Points Road, which has been closed for a construction project for several months, is expected to be reopened by the week of Sept. 27.

According to a press release from Patrolman Matthew W. Bishop of the Howell Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, the resident engineer representing the state Department of Transportation (DOT) at the project site provided the estimate of when the road will reopen.

Bishop said he was told that the new traffic signals that are in place at the intersection of Route 33 and Five Points Road are not ready to be activated. The temporary signals in use are not designed for the new traffic patterns of the intersection. Work remains to be done on driveways and curbing in the vicinity of the project site.

Additionally, the remaining construction work that needs to be done requires the southern end of Five Points Road to be closed while the work is being performed.

The traffic safety officer said the project is under the control of the DOT and noted that Howell has no authority to move up the reopening date of Five Points Road, nor would the township want the intersection fully open without the proper traffic signals functioning.

Bishop said, “On a positive note, once fully opened, the new intersection will be safer and more efficient than ever. The project was originally supposed to be completed between October and December of this year. It will be done ahead of schedule and we can realize the benefits earlier than expected.”
