Resident wants resumption of passenger rail
As a native New Jerseyan, I look back at the wonderful transportation system we had until after World War II. We could take a train from almost anywhere to anywhere.
Elizabeth was a hub for both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Baltimore & Ohio. That choice made the entire country available, with some changes, of course. But we could take the train from and into many of the small towns in the state, depending on the express or local schedule.
Now, in my “golden years,” all I have are some buses basically into New York City.
When I drive, I continually cross railroad tracks. There are abandoned stations, i.e., Freehold, Lakehurst, Cranbury Station, all over.
The huge amounts of money the federal government has given to the airlines and automobile companies due to their poor management policies could have properly funded a nationwide system to serve most of the smaller communities.
The Europeans depend upon their state-owned rail systems to move them around, and generally on time. How much longer will this wrangling continue?
