      Edward A. Joseph Sr.

      Mr. Joseph, 58, of Lakewood, died June 9 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, after a brief illness. Born in New Orleans to Alice W. and Edward Joseph, he was a graduate of Delgado College, New Orleans. He entered the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart Award, Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Rifle Marksman. Classified as a disabled veteran, he was honorably discharged from the Army on Nov. 28, 1967. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn A. Joseph; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Danielle and Ura White of Houston, Kedra and John H. Gamble of Hillside, and Melissa and Eddy Massillon, Yonna Joseph and Keisha Baptiste, all of Lakewood; a son, Edward A. Joseph Jr., at home; his mother, Alice W. Joseph of New Orleans; five sisters, Paulette Hamilton, Cheryl Henry, Consuella Johnson, Elaine Johnson and Charlene Joseph, all of Louisiana; a brother, Richard Joseph of Colorado; seven grandchildren; and many friends and other family members. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown.

      Charles A. Nilsen

      Mr. Nilsen, 88, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died April 28 in Bayshore Hospital, Holmdel. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a bus driver for Red and Tan Lines, Jersey City, and for Hi Lo Bus Co., Old Bridge. His first wife, Helen Glowacki Nilsen, died in 1980. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Zielinski Nilsen; a son, Charles A. Nilsen of Hainesport; two daughters, Karen Bean of Jackson and Elaine Nilsen of Howell; a sister, Norma Andersen of Kingston, N.Y.; three stepsons, Edward, Joseph and John Zielinski; a stepdaughter, Gloria Szerszen; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; 18 step-grandchildren; and 24 step-great-grandchildren. Services were held at Gundrum Service Home for Funerals, South Amboy. Entombment was in Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum, North Brunswick.

      James W. “Bill” Appleby

      Mr. Appleby, 68, of Monroe, formerly of South River, died June 2 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Ochs Appleby; a son, James William Appleby II of Fallsington, Pa.; two daughters, Cathy Heuser of Jackson and Bess Servon of South River; four brothers. J.R. and Richard of the Toms River section of Dover and John and Donald of Seaside Park; a sister, Katherine Blonsky of Monroe; and seven grandchildren. Services were held at Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Church of Seaside Park, 47 Fourth Ave., Seaside Park, NJ 08752.

      George W. Sampson

      Mr. Sampson, 67, of Manalapan, died June 3 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was born in New York City and had lived in Manalapan Township since 1976. Mr. Sampson was a supervisor for AT&T, retiring in 1994. After retirement, he operated George’s Help, a computer consulting firm. He was a 25-year member of the Gordons Corner Fire Company, Manalapan, where he served as chief of the Fire Police and was company photographer. He was also a charter member of the Jackson Heights Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Queens, N.Y. Mr. Sampson is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Roseann Sampson of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Bill Campbell of Jackson; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan.
