Country Dancing at New
Egypt Elks Lodge
New Egypt Elks will sponsor a country dance 8-11 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Elks Lodge, 105 Lakewood Road, New Egypt. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m..
The event will include open dancing from 8 to 11 p.m., with one dance lesson at 9 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Music and lessons will be provided by Country Class.

Temple Beth Am Players

The acting troupe at Temple Beth Am, Lakewood, is available to entertain at area venues.
The Temple Beth Am Players perform their own scripts and compositions throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties for various organizations and adult communities. Lenore Turtlebaum, director, has written scripts as well as the accompanying musical compositions that are performed. Plumsted’s photo contest
still accepting entries
There is still time to enter photos in the Plumsted Township Council for the Arts 2005 Photo Contest. Entered photos will be included in the photo show at the Plumsted Branch of the Ocean County library in October. Prizes will be awarded, and several photos will also be chosen for the council’s 2006 calendar.
The theme of this year’s photo show is “structure.” Black-and-white photos must include a structure of any type located in Plumsted Township. Creativity is encouraged.
All photos must be accompanied by an official entry form and must be submitted by Sept. 7. Call the Arts Council at (609) 758-2241, ext. 144, for forms and details.
Antique Machinery Days at Pine Creek Railroad
The New Jersey Museum of Transportation and Pine Creek Railroad, located in Historic Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall, will present the annual Antique Machinery Days Sept. 24-25. Antique tractors, trucks, construction machines, and other unusual devices will be on display. The trains of the Pine Creek Railroad will be in operation, leaving every half hour from noon to 4:30 p.m. Train fare will be $5 per person, but the rest of the show is free. Pine Creek’s shop complex will be open for guided tours, and vendors will be on hand for an antique machinery swap meet. Details: (732) 938-5524 or www.njmt.org. Ice cream social features barbershop concerts
PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Township Council for the Arts will host the third and final concert in a series of free summer concerts on Sept. 18.
The fifth annual Ice Cream Social Concert will be an a cappella festival featuring five different kinds of a cappella groups including the tight harmonies of barbershop music, the cool and pop sounds of contemporary a cappella music, and the nostalgic tunes of doo wop.
The musical lineup will include: Princeton Garden Statesmen Chorus, a men’s barbershop chorus specializing in well-known traditional and contemporary barbershop tunes; Just 4 (Kicks), a women’s barbershop quartet from the Ramapo Valley Chorus; and Crossroads, an award-winning men’s barbershop quartet that has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center, sang the national anthem for the Philadelphia Phillies, opened up for Jerry Seinfeld at a celebrity auction; and done four promotional spots for ABC Sports’ “Monday Night Football.”
In addition, attendees will enjoy a large array of food and, of course, ice cream available for purchase. There will be activities for children and displays with information and items for sale from local businesses for adults to enjoy.
The concert event will run from 3-6 p.m. at the New Egypt recreation fields (off Brindletown Road) in New Egypt. In the event of rain, the concert, food and activities will move indoors to the New Egypt Elementary School Cafeteria, 44 North Main St. Signs will be posted if the event is relocated. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Defensive driving course Sept. 12 at medical center
Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, will offer a one-session defensive driving course Sept. 12. The session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the River Road center.
The National Safety Council refresher course is intended for drivers of all ages who need to sharpen their driving skills. Completing the approved workshop will eliminate two points from a participant’s New Jersey driver’s license.
The fee is $8, made payable to County of Ocean. For point reduction, participants should bring an additional check or money order for $8 made payable to New Jersey State Safety Council. Participants are responsible for providing their own lunch. Details: (888) 724-7123.
Bus trip planned to Cape May for ‘Oktoberfest’
The Lakewood Community School is sponsoring a bus trip to “Oktoberfest” in Cape May Oct. 1. The fee for transportation is $27. The bus will depart from the Lakewood Municipal Building at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Cape May around 10:30 a.m. for its annual “Oktoberfest” on Jackson Street. The event features German food, music, a beer garden, and handmade items and crafts. Attendees may also visit Historic Washington Street Mall and shop the many quaint stores, hop a trolley for a riding tour, have lunch at one of the many eateries, or just enjoy the waterfront. The bus will return to Lakewood at approximately 6 p.m. Call (732) 905-3685 to reserve a ticket.
Healthy Hearts program to begin at Kimball
Kimball Medical Center, 198 Prospect St., Lakewood, is offering a “Healthy Hearts” program that encourages increased activity, healthful eating habits and effective management of everyday stress. The four-week wellness program, designed for adults ages 21 and older, will begin Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. and will be held on consecutive Thursdays through Oct. 20. The program is geared toward reducing factors that contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses that diminish quality of life. Weekly Heart-to-Heart support groups will be held throughout the program, culminating in a “Healthy Hearts” celebration on October 20.
