The New Jersey Museum of Transportation and Pine Creek Railroad, located in Historic Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall, will present the annual Antique Machinery Days, Sept. 24-25. Antique tractors, trucks, construction machines, and other unusual devices will be on display. The trains of the Pine Creek Railroad will be in operation, leaving every half hour from noon to 4:30 p.m. Train fare will be $5 per person, but the rest of the show is free. father-daughter gala
The Howell Recreation Department will host a father-daughter gala from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 30 at Our House Tavern, Howell. The fee of $28 per person includes a full dinner buffet, a professional color photo, and music for girls and their special man to dance to. Due to limited seating, early reservations are suggested. ‘Cute Pet Contest’
The Jackson Women of Today (JWOT) is sponsoring a “Cute Pet Contest” at the Jackson ShopRite through Sept. 11. To enter a pet in the contest, mail a photo of the pet (no larger than 4 by 6 inches) and a check for $5 to the Jackson Women of Today, P.O. Box 1042, Jackson 08527. Include the pet owner’s name, address and telephone number, and the pet’s name, on the back of the photo. Photos will not be returned.
To vote in the contest, visit the courtesy desk at ShopRite and look for the “Cute Pet Contest” display. Find the box that corresponds with the number on your favorite pet’s photo, and cast your vote. Each vote costs 1 cent, and people can vote as often as they like. The photos will also be on display at the Jackson Day festivities to give more people the opportunity to vote for Jackson’s cutest pet. The winner will be notified by mail and will receive a $50 ShopRite gift certificate. All proceeds from the contest will benefit the Jackson Women of Today. Details: (732) 833-6800.

alliance meets monthly
The Jackson Community Alliance for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CAPADA) meets monthly at the Melvin Cottrell Senior/Disabled Center on Don Connor Boulevard, in Jackson. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7 30 p.m. All are welcome.
Over the past 10 years the Alliance has sponsored many special community events including the spearheading and coordinating of Project Playground (Jackson Jungle) and the annual Sidewalk Chalk Art show as well as providing the township with numerous workshops and programs regarding drug and alcohol abuse, date rape, bullying, Internet safety, parenting workshops and special children’s and community events.

Bake sale set for Sept. 10
The Faith Circle of Jackson United Methodist Church will hold its fifth annual “Granny’s Attic and Bake Sale,” Sept. 10 from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. at Oak Tree Recreation Hall, off Diamond Road, Jackson. Items for sale will include costume jewelry, bric-a-brac, baked goods, craft items, housewares and Christmas decorations. Proceeds will go to the church and parsonage. All are welcome.
Ice cream social features barbershop concerts
PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Township Council for the Arts will host the third and final concert in a series of free summer concerts on Sept. 18.
The fifth annual Ice Cream Social Concert will be an a cappella festival featuring five different kinds of a cappella groups including the tight harmonies of barbershop music, the cool and pop sounds of contemporary a cappella music, and the nostalgic tunes of doo wop.
The musical lineup will include: Princeton Garden Statesmen Chorus, a men’s barbershop chorus specializing in well-known traditional and contemporary barbershop tunes; Just 4 (Kicks), a women’s barbershop quartet from the Ramapo Valley Chorus; and Crossroads, an award-winning men’s barbershop quartet that has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center, sang the national anthem for the Philadelphia Phillies, opened up for Jerry Seinfeld at a celebrity auction; and done four promotional spots for ABC Sports’ “Monday Night Football,” among other things.
In addition, attendees will enjoy a large array of food and, of course, ice cream available for purchase. There will be activities for children and displays with information and items for sale from local businesses for adults to enjoy.
The concert event will run from 3-6 p.m. at the New Egypt recreation fields (off Brindletown Road) in New Egypt. In the event of rain, the concert, food and activities will move indoors to the New Egypt Elementary School Cafeteria, 44 North Main St. Signs will be posted if the event is relocated. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Nok Hockey tournament winners announced
The winners of Lakewood’s annual Nok Hockey tournament were announced. More than 900 youngsters participated in the competition, which was held July 15 on seven playgrounds throughout the township.
The overall age group champions are: Joey Pedicini, Hearthstone Playground, 6-8 age group; and Issac Ruvalcaba, 9-11 age group, and Julie Kerber, 12-15 age group, both at Pine Park Playground.
Other first-place winners include Markee Paseler, 9, and Jameer Jones, 11, the Rev. Clayton Park; Nathan Paone, 13, and Juan Rivera, 10, D’Zio Park; Joefredo Toro, 7, Ive Toro, 9, and Anthony Aponte, 12, Spruce Street Park; Isaia Santos, 9, and Ishmeil Gadson, 13, Clifton Avenue Park; Christian Grimes, 6, Tyron Waverly, 11, and Jose Jusino, 12, School No. 5 Park; Danielle Hammerstone, 7, Pine Park; and Davon Jennings, age group 9-11, and Kaitlin Riddle, age group 12-15, Hearthstone Park.
Champion T-shirts were presented to all playground winners, and the overall age group champions received plaques.
Locals to visit Feast of San Gennaro Sept. 18
The Ocean County Columbus Day Parade Committee is hosting a trip to attend the Feast of San Gennaro in New York City on Sept. 18. The bus will depart from Brick Township High School at 10:30 a.m. and return at about 8 p.m. The cost of $25 per person includes bus transportation, free time for sightseeing, and refreshments on the bus. 3-on-3 basketball winners announced
Lakewood Mayor Charles Cunliffe announced the results of the annual Lakewood Recreation Playground Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament, held July 22. Rev. Clayton Park’s team of Rasheen Bowick, Matthew Vaughn, Fabian Francis and Johntel Thomas took first place in the boys’ 12-15 age group. In the boys’ 9-11 age group, Rev. Clayton Park’s team of Nike Brinson, Jamie Crippen, JaMeer Jones and Jahmeir Crews took the championship. In the girls’ 12-15 age bracket, the No. 5 School team of Shanice Brown, Margie Perez, Tenaya Williamson and Andrece Harding took first place honors in the championships held at Larry D’Zio Park. All winners will receive plaques.
Defensive driving course Sept. 12 at medical center
Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, will offer a one-session defensive driving course Sept. 12. The session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the River Road center. The National Safety Council refresher course is intended for drivers of all ages who need to sharpen their driving skills. Completing the approved workshop will eliminate two points from a participant’s New Jersey driver’s license.
The fee is $8, made payable to County of Ocean. For point reduction, participants should bring an additional check or money order for $8 made payable to New Jersey State Safety Council. Participants are responsible for providing their own lunch. Details: (888) 724-7123.

Lakewood Mayor Charles Cunliffe announced the winners of the township’s annual checkers tournament, which was held July 15 on seven playgrounds throughout the township. More than 850 youngsters participated in the competition.
The overall age group champions are: Joefredo Toro, 7, Spruce Street Playground, in the 6-8 age group; William Bowen, 10, Pine Park Playground, 9-11 age group; and Durell Marsh, 12, D’Zio playground, 12-15 age group.
Other first-place winners include Ken Oliver, 8, and Quamere Jackson, 11, at Rev. Clayton Playground; Adria Johnson, 7, and Juan Rivera, 10, at D’Zio Park; Dashiem Vaugh, 11, and Anthony Aponte, 12, Spruce Street Playground; Darius Marrow, 7, Elijah Ruffin, 11, and Keshawn Ruffin, 13, at Clifton Avenue Park; Hector Figueroa, 8, Naidiyah Davis, 11, and Imeerah Peten, 14, at School No. 5 Playground; Karl Mark, 8, and Junior Souvenir, 12, Pine Park; and Samantha Beyer, 7, Rhushawn Wright, 11, and Melvin Torres, 12, Hearthstone Playground.
