The Jersey Intensity, a 14U class A fastpitch softball team, finished tied for 17th at ASA Nationals in Owensboro, Ky., last week. The team is based in Howell and coached by Kevin O’Donnel. That type of finish is a great feat for a team from the East Coast.

The Howell Knight’s 12U baseball team is looking for pitchers to play in its fall ball season, and The Wide World of Sports Tournament, Dec. 26-Jan. 2 in Orlando, Fla. For more information, call John at (908) 209-0830.

The Howell Cobras Baseball Club will be holding tryouts Sept. 17 and 18 at 4 p.m. at the Howell Central LL Complex for 12U players who would like to compete in the Cooperstown Dreams Park Tournament in 2006. This will be the ninth year they will be attending CDP and have a guaranteed spot for the 2006 tournament. Players cannot turn 13 before May 1, 2006. Howell High School graduate Lindsey Gallo turned in the nation’s fastest 1,500 meters of 2005 last week when she posted a personal best 4:05.75 at the Rieti (Italy) Grand Prix meet. The former University of Michigan All-American finished 14th in the women’s metric mile race. Gallo is now running professionally for Reebok. She won her first-ever pro race, 1,500 meters, in Helsinki, Finland, earlier in the summer.

Nick LaBrocca, of Howell, a junior midfielder on the Rutgers University mens soccer team, was named to the All-Big East preseason squad. The Christian Brothers Academy graduate is the Scarlet Knights’ top returning scorer. In 2004, LaBrocca had two goals and two assists as Rutgers went 6-8-4. Rutgers is picked to finish second behind St. John’s in the Big East Red Division. Rutgers begins its Big East schedule on Sept. 16 against West Virginia in Piscataway at 8 p.m., followed by a home match with Pittsburgh Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.

The Jackson Renegades 12U fast pitch softball tournament team is holding tryouts for the 2006 season. After a very successful 2005 tournament season, they have now have open roster positions for the 2006 team due to girls moving up in the organization. They are looking for experienced utility players and a pitcher to fill the vacancies. Potential players must have experience at a competitive level of play and pitchers must actively be attending pitching lessons. They are looking for three select players who have the dedication, ability and drive to work hard and succeed.

The following are the results of the Westlake Ladies Golf Association’s July 14 outing — Member/Member, alternate shot. In the 18-hole competition, the first flight went to the team of Terry Iannelli and Dolores Paccione with a 61, followed by Fran Krumholz and Helene Franco (65), Pat Hanlon and Pat Hannisch (65), and Saralee Surett and Mei Chou (67).

The second flight went to Judith Bendik and Marge Kane (67), Peg Haverty and Bea Rausch (70), Mary Ann Plesniak and Jan Roth (73), and Mary Giehl and Paula Sands (73).

In the nine-hole competition, the first flight went to Nancy Robbins and Bev Riola (39), followed by Pat Kelly and Toby Lazan (39), Diana Van Hise and Nancy Alecci (39), and Joyce Edwards and Sandy Kwiecinski (40).

The second flight went to Angie Yasson and Barbara Bilenker (40), followed by Lorraine Alessio and Ellen Sorger (43), Vickie Turco and Sylvia Cohen (45), and Genny Peterson and Maxine Cahn (45).

Dottie Carlson scored a hole-in-one on the sixth hole.
