      Howell Emergency Services has teamed with local businesses in Howell to take part in a township-wide effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Donations of the following items will be accepted: pillows, socks, underwear, blankets, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, batteries, flashlight, towels, tampons, sanitary napkins, diapers, baby formula, dry baby food, cat food, dog food, nonperishable snacks, and air mattresses.

      Donations are being accepted now through Oct. 2 from 6-9 p.m. at the Adelphia Fire Company, (732) 462-8846; Farmingdale-Howell First Aid Squad, (732) 938-4500; Freewood Acres Fire Company, (732) 363-3880; Howell First Aid Squad, (732) 938-4500; Ramtown Fire Company, (732) 458-0222; Southard Fire Department, (732) 364-3399; and the Squankum Fire Company, (732) 938-6630.

      Extended hours will be held for collections at the following locations: Howell Town Hall, 251 Preventorium Road; Just Carpets, 4329 Route 9 north; Kirk Florist, 80 West Farms Road; Howell Lanes, 1002 Route 9 south; Manasquan Savings Bank, 167 Newtons Corner Road; Mulligan’s, 203 Squankum Road; and Young’s Appliance, 4658 Route 9 south. Volunteers are needed to help with collections and packing trucks. Call Hal Ornstein at (732) 685-3600 or Gene Young at (732) 948-4343 to volunteer.

      Seaview Orthopaedics, Atlantic Medical Associates and Community Surgical will be collecting lightly used scrubs, new toiletry items, AA batteries and prepaid phone cards on Sept. 30 to donate to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Please include letters, pictures or children’s drawings to show U.S. servicemen and women how much they are appreciated. Prize drawings will be held throughout the day.

      Community Surgical Supply will hold collections from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. at its locations at 9 Hospital Drive, Toms River, (732) 349-1400; 1636 Route 37 West, Toms River, (732) 349-2990; 1328 River Ave., Lakewood, (732) 905-6400; Details: www.communitysurgical.com.

      Care-One at Jackson, formerly Jackson Health Care Center, enjoyed an afternoon tea on Aug. 24 with the Amazing Graces from St. Aloysius Church, Jackson. Residents and volunteers dressed in Victorian clothes and hats. The hats were designed and made by the recreation staff. Cups and saucers were supplied and donated by the Amazing Graces.

      Sun National Bank has donated $10,000 to kick off a fund-raising event to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. It is also collecting donations from the bank’s employees and customers. After the employee/customer donations reach the $10,000 mark, Sun National Bank will then match, dollar-for-dollar, all additional dollar amounts donated.
