The Jackson Elks will hold a memorial service Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 1059 East Veterans Highway. A local artist has been commissioned to design a special memorial portrait for this service to be used as a centerpiece during the ceremony. Pictures of loved ones who have served or are currently serving our country (soldiers) and our community (police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, etc.) are being sought. Submissions should include some words of remembrance/honor with the drawing as part of a permanent tribute to be displayed at the lodge.

Performers sought for Plumsted talent show
The Plumsted Township Council for the Arts is calling all talented residents for its fifth annual Talent Show. Auditions will be held Nov. 5, 9-11 a.m. at the New Egypt High School auditorium, Evergreen Road. The talent show will take place Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the same location. All talent is welcome to audition, especially adults and children in grades four and above.

Foot reflexology course
offered in Lakewood
To help relieve stress and tension and soothe those aching feet, the Lakewood Community School will offer a two-week course on foot reflexology, beginning Nov. 8, as part of the fall adult enrichment program.
Classes will be held at Lakewood High School, 866 Somerset Ave., 7-9 p.m. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting pants or shorts, and bring a towel and massage oil/lotion to class.
Couples or partners are required.
The fee is $18 per couple for the two-week class.

Applications now taken for JSPRAA awards
The Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Association (JSPRAA) is now accepting submissions for its 2005 James R. McCormick Memorial Scholarship Awards. The deadline is Dec. 9.
The awards are open to students in Monmouth and Ocean counties. To qualify, candidates must be pursuing a degree or certified course of study in an accredited junior or community college, college, university or professional trade school; and pursuing communications, public relations, journalism or advertising as a major course of study. Applications from candidates pursuing studies in other fields, but with a main interest in the communications profession will also be considered.
Students must be entering the second of a two-year course of study or the second through fourth year of a four-year course of study. Graduate students are not eligible. Any candidate who has received JSPRAA scholarship aid for the second year of study in a two-year program will not be eligible unless the candidates continues in a four-year program.
To apply, candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from an instructor in public relations, journalism, advertising, radio and/or television broadcasting, or a member of JSPRAA.

Fall culinary classes
offered for adults
The Lakewood Community School has scheduled the following culinary classes for adults this fall: “Nibbles and Creative Hors D’oeuvres,” Nov. 15-16, and “Petit Fours” (little cakes), Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Security being upgraded
at Lakewood Airport
With heightened awareness of security issues, Lakewood Airport is taking steps to secure its facility. Plans are under way to complete the perimeter fence so that it will completely encircle the airport proper and limit access to the flight line. The existing fence at the terminal has had its entrance gates renovated to include actuating mechanisms that require an access code for entrance. Entrance through the terminal will still be available. The viewing area on the terminal parking lot will not be affected and the public will still be able to watch aircraft land and take off, and listen to the pilots’ transmissions. Benches for the public to use have been ordered and will be installed as soon as they arrive.
Kimball Medical Center defensive driving course
A defensive driving course will be offered Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Kimball Medical Center’s Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect St., Lakewood. This refresher course is for drivers of all ages. Completion of this course can lead to a reduction of two points from New Jersey state driver’s record. The fee to attend is $8 per person with an additional $8 required on a separate check for point reduction. Call (888) SBHS-123 to register.

The Lakewood High School Performing Arts III and IV classes of Angela Corenblith will perform an Evening of Improvs at the Cornerstone Caffe, Main Street, Freehold, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.

for spot in talent show
The Plumsted Township Council for the Arts is calling all talented residents for its fifth annual talent show. Auditions will be held Nov. 5 from 9-11:30 a.m. in the New Egypt High School auditorium. The actual talent show will be held Nov. 19 at 7 p.m in the high school auditorium).
All talent is welcome to audition. Adults are especially welcome, as are children who are in the fourth grade or above. The Council for the Arts wants to remind residents that this is a talent show, not a competition. Jackson Women of Today
host Harvest of Gifts
The Harvest of Gifts auction and luncheon will be hosted by the Jackson Women of Today, Nov. 6 at noon at The Claflin House located in Lakewood Country Club, County Line Road, Lakewood. Proceeds will benefit parents of Autistic Children in Brick and the Jackson Women of Today. Admission of $34 includes a buffet luncheon, five raffle tickets, and door prizes. A cash bar will be available.
