Frank M. Zurey
Mr. Zurey, 58, of Manalapan, died Feb. 22 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Passaic, he grew up in Garfield and had lived in Manalapan for the past 25 years. Mr. Zurey was a self-employed contractor. He was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Pamela; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debra of Howell; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Eddie Myler of Manalapan; his mother, Emma Zurey of Garfield; a sister, Patricia Mercadante of Atlantic Highlands; and eight grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. The Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Ilona Raffay
Mrs. Raffay, 76, of Middletown, died Feb. 24 at home. Born in Kislamg, Hungary, she relocated to the United Sates in 1957, and resided in Jersey City and Lakewood, prior to moving to Middletown in 1963. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Catharine's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She is survived by her husband, Laszlo Raffay Sr.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Laszlo and Virginia Raffay Jr. of Greendell, and Gabriel P. Raffay of Ocean; a daughter, Marianna E. Piazza of Freehold; a sister, Elizabeth Horvadh of Hungary; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was at St. Catharine's Church. Entombment was at Fair View Mausoleum, Middletown. Erna G. Persaud
Mrs. Persaud, 78, of Freehold, died March 5 at home. She was born in British Guyana and lived there before moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., and then to Howell in 1983. Mrs. Persaud was a sales representative for Bata Shoes, British Guyana. She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Farmingdale. Mrs. Persaud was predeceased by her husband, Rupert Cheong, in 1975; a granddaughter, Sharon L. Storey; and a sister, Juliet Bourne. Surviving are two sons, Robert Cheong of Lakewood and Ronald Cheong of Toronto, Canada; a daughter, Jacqueline Storey of Freehold; a sister, Irma Persaud of Toronto; and five grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church with the Rev. Michael Vona officiating. Entombment followed at Maplewood Cemetery Mausoleum, Freehold Township. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements.
Edna Hanley Strachan Jakubecy
Mrs. Jakubecy, 91, of Middletown, died Feb. 27 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She resided in Little Silver, prior to moving to Middletown two years ago. She was a homemaker. Prior to that, she was an avid sportswoman, winning the North American Speed Skating Championships two times, the Silver Skates Competition in New York City, and inductee in the New York City Sports Hall of Fame. She also won several regional championships in swimming and high diving. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Red Bank Elks Lodge No. 233. She was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Strachan in 1967. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Emil L.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Sura Strachan of Holmdel, Jim and Brenda Jakubecy of Charlotte, N.C., and Dick and Susan Jakubecy of Dunwoody, Ga.; a daughter, Susan Palmer of Lakewood; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. James Church. Entombment was at Fair View Cemetery Mausoleum, Middletown. Arrangements were by Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Bertha Dudkin
Mrs. Dudkin, 92, of Englishtown, died Feb. 25 at home. Born in Harrison, she had resided in the Englishtown area since 1947. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Dudkin, in 2000, and a sister, Jean Cworkowski, in 1998. Mrs. Dudkin is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley Jr. and Charlotte Dudkin of Pennsylvania; a sister, Agnes Cworkowski of Jackson Township; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Angelina Gouvernel
Mrs. Gouvernel, 79, of Jackson, died March 8 at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Freehold Township for more than 20 years before moving to Jackson in 1986. Mrs. Gouvernel was a quality control inspector for Carter Wallace, Cranbury, for seven years before retiring in 1995. Prior to that, she worked for Worthington Biochemical Co., Freehold Township. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society of St. Monica's Church, and a member of Seniors Who Care, both in Jackson. Mrs. Gouvernel was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1974; and a brother, Frank, in 2004. She is survived by a son, George Gouvernel of Riverside; three daughters, Lily Ann Kafka and Connie Crossen, both of Jackson, and Susan Ferro of Fischerville, Va.; two brothers, Vito Mastromarino of Barnegat and John Mastromarino of Staten Island, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Sherman of Massapequa, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, both in Freehold Township. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
