Sam's taps teacher as outstanding

No one at Howell High School was surprised to learn that Stephen Kazakoff was named a Sam's Club Teacher of the Year, except for Kazakoff, who had no idea he had been entered into the competition by his students.

According to his third year drama students, there was never any doubt that he would win.

"He's not just an instructor, he's a true teacher," said Josh Slauscius, senior, describing how Kazakoff motivates his students by mixing a variety of subjects and elements into his acting classes.

"He draws us out and encourages us to set higher goals," said senior Tarah Aponte, who initiated the essay nomination by describing a teacher who goes above and beyond his regular responsibilities.

Representatives from Sam's Club came to the school with an oversized check for $1,000 made payable to Howell High School, a $100 Sam's Club gift card, and a congratulatory cake.

Describing his reaction upon hearing of the award, Kazakoff said he was "surprised and extremely flattered and touched that students took the time to do this for me."

Kazakoff, one of 3,000 teachers from around the country who received this local award, will be entered into the state competition whose winner will compete for a national award of $25,000.

The $1,000 prize will go toward the installation of new lighting in the Howell High School auditorium, according to Kazakoff.
