Jackson road work planned
JACKSON - Next year is shaping up to be a busy time on at least four roads in Jackson.
The Ocean County Board of Freeholders recently introduced three ordinances totaling $6.5 million that will fund the Jackson road work along with an intersection improvement project in neighboring Dover Township.
Work is expected to begin next spring on a $4 million improvement project along Route 528 between Gudz Road and Route 547.
The 2-mile stretch of road will be completely rebuilt and widened with improvements to several intersections. Drainage in the area will also be upgraded.
"We started working on Route 528 in Brick Township several years ago," said Freeholder John P. Kelly, liaison to the Ocean County Engineer's Office. "As we complete one section, we move west and onto another."
Crews are now improving Route 528 from Route 9 to Gudz Road, he said.
Other work in the area includes the installation of several new traffic lights near the site of the new Jackson Liberty High School, he said.
The freeholders are also allocating $1 million for the reconstruction of New Prospect Road at Aldrich Road.
The intersection will be rebuilt and a new traffic signal installed.
"Both roads are popular with motorists traveling between Ocean and Monmouth counties," said Freeholder James F. Lacey, liaison to the Ocean County Road Department. "Improving this intersection will ease the commute for many drivers."
A third ordinance will partially fund the reconstruction of Hyson Road near Cook Road and the construction of a new Rova Farms Bridge on Route 571 near the Cassville section.
The initial design of the new bridge is expected to cost about $500,000. Total cost of the span should be about $4 million, with the work completed by 2008.
Another $200,000 will be allocated to realigning a curve along Hyson Road near Cook Road.
The same ordinance reserves $300,000 for the reconstruction of the Route 571 and Route 527 intersection in Dover Township. Work there will include building an eastbound left turn lane on Route 571 at the signalized intersection.
