"Six Steps to a Better Business," a free workshop for local business owners, will be held Aug. 24-25 at the Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, 17 Broad St., Freehold.

Susan Koval and Marshall Calman, certified business coaches with Action International, will present strategies for business owners to take control of their profits and cash flow. Strategies will include how to turn marketing into an investment rather than an expense, how to build a business that no longer competes on price, how to attract and retain people, and how to increase customers, revenues and profits.

Those interested in attending may choose an evening workshop Aug. 24, from 6:30-9 p.m. or a morning workshop Aug. 25, from 7:30-10 a.m. Refreshments will be served. Details and registration: (732) 792-1311.

Two surgeons who have trained at some of the finest medical schools and institutions in the country, as well in the U.S. Army Reserves, have chosen to open their first medical practice together in Jackson, affiliated with Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood.

Dr. Vincent Moss and Dr. Vance Moss, surgeons and twin brothers, have opened Mid-Atlantic Specialty-Surgical Group in Jackson and Whiting, and will be opening a third office in Howell this.

Vincent Moss is a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon, specializing in minimally invasive pulmonary reduction for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. He also has introduced to Kimball Med-ical Center a new sophisticated surgical procedure that is emerging as an effective long-term treatment option for chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a digestive condition that causes severe heartburn in nearly one-third of the American population.

Vance Moss is a urologist and is fellowship-trained in renal transplant surgery. He specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgery to treat prostate cancer and kidney stones.

The identical twins are also majors in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps, and join Kimball Medical Center following a four-month tour of duty in Kabul, Afghanistan, where they helped to save hundreds of lives and received a number of commendations and medals for their medical mission undertaken as a part of the U.S. military's "Operation Enduring Freedom."

The doctors are now accepting new patients in their Jackson office, 161 Bartley Road. Their office in Howell will be in Aldrich Plaza, Route 9 North, and is slated to open this summer.

Young Professionals, Forty and Under, a new Lakewood Chamber of Commerce committee and a support group for professionals and college graduates, will hold its first monthly meeting at the "507 Main" restaurant, 507 Main Street, Belmar, Aug. 30, 6-8:30 p.m. The cost is $6 and includes unlimited pizza. After a short informative meeting, attendees can stay to network. Young Professionals, Forty and Under, aims to bring together younger people who are working in area businesses and companies but do not have a business affiliation of people their age that could help them as they "learn the ropes" from more experienced business professionals.

Brian Kirschner has been named assistant director of public relations at University of the Sciences in Philadel-phia (USP). Kirschner previously worked for six years in the communications department at the Philadelphia 76ers and he was the director of communications this past season.

Kirschner will serve as the point person for all media inquiries and public relations outreach for the university. He will act as the media relations liaison and will be proactively promoting USP in the local, regional, national and trade press.

During his time in the 76ers Com-munications Department (2000-06), Kirschner assisted with all aspects of the team's PR efforts and oversaw the team's Internet Web site.

Prior to his NBA experience, he worked for five years at Temple Univer-sity (1996-2000) in the sports infor-mation department, serving as the sports information director from 1997 to 2000 and working closely with Hall of Fame basketball coach John Chaney.

Kirschner, who is a Lakewood native and a graduate of Lakewood High School, resides with his family in Mont-gomery County, Pa. He is the son of Frances and Robert Kirschner, of Lake-wood.

Michael Muscillo of Howell was selected to be appointed as the adimistrator of the borough of Monmouth Beach, effective Aug. 28.

Muscillo is currently serving as the deputy director of administration for the city of Long Branch and will serve part-time in the borough of Monmouth Beach while continuing to serve Long Branch in a part-time capacity under terms of a shared service agreement also approved by the commissioners.

Muscillo has been business administrator in South Amboy and deputy director of administration and assistant administrator in Long Branch, with more than 15 years of public service.

He holds a bachelor's degree with a major in political science from Montclair University and a master's degree in political science from Montclair Univer-sity and a master's degree in public administration from Valdesta State University.
