School board candidates file to run

Six Jackson residents will square off in a race for two three-year seats on the Jackson Board of Education in the April 17 school election.

The deadline for residents to submit a petition to run for a school board seat was 4 p.m. Feb. 26. Candidates must be a resident of the town in which they are seeking a school board seat.

Residents who serve on school boards in New Jersey are not paid for their service to the community.

The seats on the Jackson board that are presently held by Linda Lackay and Gus Acevedo will be up for grabs in six weeks. Lackay is the board's current president. Acevedo and Lackay have both filed to run for re-election.

Lackay and Acevedo will be challenged by Nicolas Antonoff Jr., Sal Duscio, Scott Sargent and Sharon E. Dey.

In Lakewood, four people are running for three three-year terms. The candidates are incumbents Meir Neumann and Alan Gonter. They will run against Gay P. Huggins-Dickey and Avi Braude.

Board member Simcha Shain filed a petition to run for re-election, but withdrew the petition on Monday, according to information provided by the board.

Residents who go to the polls on April 17 to elect board members will also vote on the 2007-08 budget that has been proposed by their municipality's school board. The budgets detail the line items that will be funded in the school district during the coming school year. The budget and the tax rate that goes with it help to determine the school taxes property owners pay to fund the operation of the school district.
