Blewett wins NASCAR Whelen Modified feature
WALL TOWNSHIP - Jimmy "Showtime" Blewett, of Howell, held off brother John Blewett III and defending race winner Reggie Ruggiero to win the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour feature at Wall Township Speedway Sunday afternoon. John Blewett, who won the inaugural NASCAR modified tour race in 2003, and 2004 winner Ruggiero set the stage by splitting their respective 50-lap heats. "Showtime" ousted Ruggiero on lap two, however, and kept his United Crane Rental/Archer Steel No. 12 Troyer-Chevrolet out front the remaining 48 laps. The victory unofficially vaults Jim Blewett into the NASCAR WMT points lead. Defending WTS Whelen All-American Series Modified track champ John Blewett traded second with Ruggiero before taking it for good on lap 39. Contenders Ted Christopher and Matt Hirshman rounded out the top five of 26 finishers. Ruggerio and John Blewett's heat victories were the first ever for the NASCAR WMT "Flash" format, replacing time trials and a 150-lap feature at specified tracks. Robin Johnston, of Wayne, Pa., was the class of the American Three-Quarter Midget Racing Association field. The CRJ and Sons Contracting/Duchak Engines No. 13 homebuilt-Suzuki GSXR pilot split the eight-lap heats with Mike Tidaback and led the entire 20-lap feature. Club Risque teammates Tim Behmer and Chris Deritis filled the podium. Jeff Kot, of Willow Grove, Pa., was released from Jersey Shore University Medical Center with bruises after taking a head-on turn-four guardrail hit on lap 13. Tidaback, who drove Russ Bailey's No. 51 Lindblad-GSXR to heat victory, was sidelined for the feature. Current points leader Bailey reclaimed his car after bending the front axle of Joey Payne's No. 26 Spitfire-GSXR in his heat. Payne was out for his son's First Communion. Rich Mongeau, of Manchester, split his street stock heat and led all 25 laps of his feature. The Fratto Bros. Auto Wholesalers No. 77 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo last won a street stock feature in 1999. Ray Minieri and John McCormack completed the podium.
Farrell flies in Wall Weekend Thunder Modified main Tommy Farrell III, of Shrewsbury, and Joe Constandi, of Flemington, split Saturday's Thunder at the Shore Weekend headliners at Wall Township Speedway. Farrell vaulted from seventh starting spot to take the NASCAR WTS Whelen All-American Series Modified main lead from pole man Jason Treat by lap three. The Thomas Farrell Contracting No. 8 Troyer Chevrolet pilot held on to the point the remaining 32 laps for his fourth career Wall WAAS main victory. Defending track champion John Blewett III, of Howell, took second to Farrell by 1.307 seconds while holding off Steve Reed. Jimmy Blewett and last week's winner Kevin Flockhart rounded out the top five of 15 finishers. Shaun Carrig and Dave Michel split the twin 10-lap heats. Constandi went the extra distance to win the 40-lap Value Towing Factory Stock feature, taking the point from Richard Petey on lap six. Constandi and teammate Tom Fratesi took their Nos. 21 and 22 Fratesi Masonry 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlos for a one-two finish. Opening night victor Vern McLaughlin III inherited third after Gregg Clerico's car failed technical inspection. Constandi and Richard Petey shared the eight-lap heats. Bohn, of Freehold, and Geibel, of Brick, split the 20-lap RMP Modified Affordable Division mains. Divisional champ Bohn captured last week's make-up main after getting past pole man Scott Riggleman. Geibel also ousted Riggleman halfway past the scheduled feature. Eyres, of Colts Neck, won his second straight 25-lap Sportsman main in wire-to-wire fashion. Fulton, of Bridgewater, won his second career 25-lap Legends feature over Ron Poley. Dennis Macri and Bob Baltera won the heats.
