      Free power wheelchairs for seniors and disabled
            The Senior Wheels USA Program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they quality. The power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

      Town wants comments on defeated school plan
            A new electronic mail link has been added to Jackson's Internet Web site. "The township has established an electronic mail link on the Web site http://www.jacksontwpnj.net for residents to send comments on the defeated school budget," Mayor Mark Seda said in a May 3 press release.

      Police seeking info on bagel store arson
            Police have determined that a fire that occurred at 10 p.m. April 18 at the Manhattan Bagel store in the Aldrich Plaza, Route 9 north, was an arson. Police said a suspicious fire broke out on Dec. 20 at the same eatery. Police said the two fires are related. The owner of Manhattan Bagel is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual responsible.

            The Main Street and Neighborhood Preservation programs of Plumsted will host the annual New Egypt Day celebration May 19. Vendors, crafters, businesses and local organizations are being sought to participate in this outdoor, family street festival and flea market in downtown New Egypt and Oakford Lake.       Free community bingo game in Jackson
            The community is invited to enjoy a morning of community bingo and a continental breakfast, May 16, 8-11 a.m. at CareOne at Jackson, a nursing and rehabilitation center located at 11 History Lane.       Sports skills class for young children
            The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will conduct a sports skills class for children ages 4-6 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. May 24. Children will learn skills and coordination for throwing, catching and kicking. Safe equipment will be used, such as foam and plastic bats, balls, etc. Refer to program 133332-1A when registering. An additional session will run from noon to 12:45.

      Senior volunteers sought to aid special needs youths
            Family Friends is seeking senior volunteers in Ocean and Monmouth counties to provide support and assistance to children with special needs age 12 and under and their families. Family Friends provides an opportunity for volunteers age 55 and older to use their skills and personality to assist children with special needs and their families.

      Players and sponsors sought for golf fundraiser
            The Howell-Jackson Knights of Columbus Council 6201 will hold its 23rd annual charity golf tournament on May 21 at the Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson. This year's event is being held in memory of Mark DeBiase, an active officer of the council who passed away last year.

      Massachusetts Ave. to be improved
            Work will begin this summer on improvements to Massachusetts Avenue near Route 70 in Toms River and Lakewood. The estimated $2.5 million project will rebuild and widen the road and add left turn lanes at the entrances to two adult communities.

      Driver's refresher course for senior citizens
            The Orchards at Bartley will host an AARP Driver's Refresher Course for seniors in the community. The two-day class will be held May 10-11 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Orchards at Bartley in Jackson. The classroom-style refresher course is designed to meet the needs of senior drivers over the age of 50.

      Trip to see 'Curtains' on Broadway set for June 9
            The Lakewood Community School is accepting reservations for the new hit Broadway musical "Curtains," starring David Hyde Pierce, scheduled for June 9. Tickets for the trip to see this backstage murder-mystery musical comedy from the creators of "Chicago" and "Cabaret" are $115 and include a front mezzanine seat and bus transportation.
