American Woman Fitness Center in Freehold Township will hold a Fit Kids camp this summer to help youngsters stay active, healthy and busy during their break from school. Fit Kids camp is a fitness program designed to promote physical well-being and create a love for exercise among children. The camp will meet every Thursday, July 12 through Aug. 2, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Fit Kids is open for enrollment to girls ages 10-13. Details: (732) 409-6800.
Mary-Ellen Rada, a doctor of chiropractic from Jackson, recently received the Distinguished Service Award from Sherman College of Straight Chiro-practic in appreciation for her outstanding contributions, time and commitment to the chiropractic profession, the public and the college. The award presentation was made Memorial Day weekend in Spartanburg, S.C., as part of the college's annual homecoming program.
The Distinguished Service Award is given to a Sherman graduate who has distinguished himself or herself for service to the community, the profession or Sherman College.
In addition to her private practice, Rada has served the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards and the National Board of Chiropractic Exam-iners in numerous capacities. She was also appointed to the New Jersey Depart-ment of Law and Public Safety/Division of Consumer Affairs and the state Board of Chiropractic Examiners, where she has been serving since 2000.
While a student at Sherman, Rada received many awards, including the highest honor given to a graduating senior by Sherman College - the Milton W. Garfunkel Award.
Jersey Mike's Subs shops in Ocean and Monmouth counties proved successful in the region's battle against hunger with a month-long fundraiser. Store owners raised $7,609 for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties by donating $1 to the food bank for every large No. 13 sub and 50 cents for every regular No. 13 they sold throughout the month of May.
Jersey Mike's store owners presented the check at the food bank's warehouse in Neptune on June 7.
The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties distributes more than 3 million pounds of food a year to the hungry through its 275 feeding programs in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Almost 70,000 people are served each year, including 19,000 children.
Desha L. Jackson, a Lakewood resident and attorney with the New Jersey Department of Corrections Equal Employment Division, where she serves as the assistant director, has been reappointed to a two-year term on the New Jersey State Bar Association Board of Trustees. She was sworn in at the NJSBA's annual meeting in Atlantic City.
An NJSBA member since 1995, Jackson was first appointed to the board of trustees in 2005. She is active in many NJSBA entities, including the Diversity Committee, of which she is co-chair, the Pipeline Task Force, and Minorities in the Profession Section. Additionally, Jackson is the president-elect of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association and is the immediate past president of the Association of Black Women Lawyers.
Most recently, Jackson was appointed to serve as vice chair for southern New Jersey of the Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee for 2007-08. She has served on the board of trustees of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation.
Jackson received her law degree from Stetson University in St. Petersburg, Fla. She is a member of the American Bar Association.
Tracy Cavanaugh, a certified mortgage planner with America's First Fund-ing Group, has been named Business Person of the Month of May by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce.
The Lakewood Chamber of Com-merce recently presented three scholarships for $1,000 each to Aubrey Blazewicz, Cristal Candia and Krista Hutcherson, all students at Lakewood High School. The chamber's Scholarship Committee chose these students from applications submitted to the committee by the high school.
