      Alvarez puts another fine season in books
      Earns second straight All-Conference nod at Monmouth
            Nichole Alvarez of Brick talks modestly about her season, but her skills were not lost on the Northeast Conference, which named the sophomore to the First Team All-Conference for the second straight year. "I did all right, better than last year," said Alvarez, a 20-year-old majoring in communications.

      Delmarva ends red-hot BlueClaws' win streak
            LAKEWOOD - Brandon Tripp's RBI single in the ninth inning broke a 2-all tie and gave Delmarva a 3-2 win over Lakewood on Monday, snapping the BlueClaws' seven-game winning streak. The BlueClaws (4-1) entered Tuesday night's game having scored just 20 runs in their last seven games and 28 in their last eight, but had won the first seven nonetheless.

            The most memorable games of Scott Blum's football career haven't been on the gridiron. They've taken place in an indoor arena. Blum, an ex-Howell High School All-State offensive lineman who went on to star at Rowan University, plays center for the Reading Express of the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA).

      Holbrook Red Sox win District 18 crown
            LAKEWOOD - The Holbrook Red Sox put on a hitting clinic last week in a 16-6 victory over the Toms River East Yankees to win the District 18 regular season championship game at FirstEnergy Park. "We have been swinging the bats very well this season," Red Sox coach Dave Citron said. "In this game in particular, we were getting contributions up and down the lineup.

      Martz has competition covered at New Egypt
            NEW EGYPT - Sam Martz of Somerville finally got the monkey off his back on Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway as he broke through for his first DIRTcar Modified win of 2007. Martz, who ended the 2006 season on a three-race win streak, took the lead at the halfway mark and went on to claim the $3,000 top prize.

            The Howell Central Rangers won the Junior Division (13- and 14-year-olds) championship on June 16 with a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Howell Central Red Sox. With ace Ryan Keegan on the hill for the Rangers, the game was tied 2-2 until the Sox pushed a run across in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
