Use of technology earns honor
HOWELL - The Center for Digital Education and National School Boards Association have announced the 2007 Digital School Boards Survey winners. The Digital School Boards Survey examines how school boards and their districts are applying information technology to better engage local communities and constituents, and improve service delivery and quality of education to public schools.
According to a press release, the Howell K-8 School District placed second in the category of 2,501 to 15,000 students, making the climb from ninth place in 2004, fifth place in 2005, and third place in 2006.
Survey questions and criteria centered on school boards' online presence, technology applications that allow the public to interact with school board members, access to information such as school board calendars, policies and agendas, and technology advancements in the school board meeting rooms.
"2007's Digital School Boards Survey was truly impressive," said Marina Leight, vice president of education for the Center for Digital Education. "America's school districts and school boards continue to find innovative uses for technology that are making our children's schools better year after year."
"Howell's teachers are taking advantage of emerging technologies to deepen their students' learning and prepare them for the future. This award recognizes the unique opportunities the district is providing for our students," said Claire Williams, technology supervisor for the Howell K-8 School District.
"The Howell Board of Education has put technology in the forefront for many years. It's wonderful to get recognized for our efforts," Superintendent of Schools Enid Golden said.
Howell is the home of 10 elementary schools and three middle schools, educating more than 7,000 students. According to information posted on the school district's Internet Web site, the primary priority of Howell's educators is the students.
To that end, teachers and administrators continue to work toward developing programs that allow students to excel, improving safety and maintaining an environment that fosters the learning and development of Howell's students.
