      FRHSD budget gains approval from voters
      Goon, Caiazza, Placitella elected to 3-year terms on high school board
            Voters in the Freehold Regional High School District have given their approval to raise a general fund local tax levy of $110.9 million to support a $174.6 million budget for the 2008-09 school year. The annual school election was held on April 15.

      Local teams producing positive early-season results on the field
            Abbey Houston was nothing short of brilliant as the New Egypt High School softball team rolled to a 3-0 shutout victory over Manchester Monday afternoon in an Ocean County Tournament first-round game. Houston overpowered the Manchester lineup, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one hit as the Lady Warriors, seeded third, improved to a gaudy 11-1 on the season.

            Parade Magazine officially released its 32nd All-America team on Sunday in newspapers across the country. Rutgers women's basketball saw its five incoming freshmen land on the first three squads. April Sykes (Crawford, Miss.) was named to the first team after averaging 25.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists for East Oktibbeha High School this past season.

      Lakewood baseball still trying to find its way
      Piners have a 1-6 record
            While the Lakewood High School baseball team has struggled through the first quarter of the season, there have been a couple of players who have provided bright spots for the Piners. Seniors Chris Guzman and John Sanchez are both off to fast starts for Lakewood, which is 1-6 overall.

      Good weather brings anglers out from winter hibernation
            The weather has been fantastic, and so has flounder fishing in the Raritan Bay. Anglers have been picking away steadily at flounder all week. Chris from Crabby's Bait & Tackle in Keyport reported an excellent buildup of winter flounder in the Back Bay around the ammo pier and the 3 can.
