Suspect sought in Lakewood shooting

LAKEWOOD — On July 27 at about 10:48 a.m., Lakewood police received a call from officials at Kimball Medical Center who said they were treating a female with a single gunshot wound to the head. Officer Dennis Dowden responded and gathered information surrounding the shooting.

It was determined that the incident occurred on New York Avenue. Detectives Steven Wexler and Leroy Marshall responded to assist.

According to police, information was developed which indicated that the suspect in the alleged shooting, Eberardo Florez-Garcia, was possibly still in his residence on New York Avenue.

The perimeter of the residence was secured and Deputy Chief Frederick Capper began the negotiations process with the assistance of Lt. Paul Daly.

It was soon determined that the suspect had left the residence prior to the arrival of the initial police officers. The residence was searched by the Lakewood Police Department Special Response Team and secured. The room in the residence in which the shooting occurred was processed by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department

Criminal Investigation Unit.

According to police, Wexler and Marshall continued the investigation and charged Florez-Garcia, 29, with aggravated assault. His bail, upon capture, will be $30,000 with no 10 percent option.

The suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing.

The victim, Celene Abrajan-Lucas, was treated and released from Kimball Medical Center with minor injuries. Through the investigation it was determined that the weapon used in the assault was a boat signal flare gun, with a 12 gauge signal flare, according to police.
