More examination needed for numbers at intersection
The accident statistics for the intersection of County Line Road and Route 9 in Lakewood ("Accident Numbers Help Tell Story of Intersection," Tri-Town News, July 24, 2008) are important but hard to interpret in the absence of other comparable statistics.
We need the same details on other intersections along Route 9 that may or may not have left turn arrows or left turn only lanes on the cross intersections.
Without such details, the wrong alternatives might be chosen. All too often, highway design changes are made by engineers and then executed only to have the public wonder in amazement whether the engineers ever drove on any roads in the state of New Jersey.
The underlying process for this evaluation needs more information and public scrutiny. Hopefully, the Lakewood Police Department, Ocean County engineers
and New Jersey Department of Transportation will do exactly that.
