The Monmouth University football team completed its first of two scrimmages for the 2008 preseason on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Kessler Field.

The Hawks were split into the White (offense) and Blue (defense) squads, and alternated playing between the first, second, third and fourth teams.

The first quarter of play ended with no scores as the defense played very fast and aggressively. David Sinisi ripped off a 20- yard run, the longest play up to that point of the day, but it was negated by a holding penalty late in the first quarter.

Sinisi scored the game's first touchdown on a stretch running play to the left side as he made a cut back toward the middle of the field and took it to the house for a 19-yard score. On the ensuing extra point, the snap was high, but the holder Dan Burke made a heads-up play, scooped up the ball and found Steve Dowens for the two-point conversion.

Running back L.J. Caprio scored the first touchdown during the red zone period, diving in from a yard out. The scoring play was set up by a 19-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Mandeville to receiver Alex Laipple.

Fred Weingart hit a 32-yard field goal from the right hash, and freshman Dan Burke had his first field-goal attempt blocked by Ayo Falae.

Running back Bobby Giles ripped off a 17-yard run to begin the second half, setting up the offense at the 38-yard line. Mandeville led the day's longest sustained drive to begin the second half, as the 65-yard drive culminated in a Giles four-yard touchdown run.
