Two road races to highlight Labor Day weekend

      As the summer road-racing season winds down, the Labor Day weekend will see two large races. First up is the Saturday in the Park Women's 5K in Holmdel, followed on Monday by the Pier Village 5K in Long Branch. The Pier Village event is the final race in the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix series.

The Hawks are hosting the Monmouth Cross Country Kickoff, starting at 10 a.m. Coach Joe Campagni's men and women were picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference this fall behind defending champion Quinnipiac.

      Iwas recently invited on a six-man charter with my good friend Keith Bush. The six of us were all set to hit the canyon and fight tuna. The weather couldn't have been any better; conditions were to be like a bathtub in the canyon. We had been preparing and e-mailing one another for weeks. Everyone was in charge of something — sandwiches, snacks, sodas and beers.

      The Monmouth University men's soccer team defeated Mercer County Community College, 3-0, in a scrimmage Aug. 20 on the Great Lawn. The first half was even, and the Hawks had the best scoring chance of the period when Ryan Kinne's shot from the top of the 18 hit the crossbar. The two teams tested each other; however, both had limited scoring opportunities.

      Rutgers field hockey midfielder Amy Lewis has been selected as the Big East Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in a vote by head coaches, it was announced by the league office today. Lewis was a unanimous selection to the All-Big East Preseason Team.
