Writer finds Kafton's push for mayor to be offensive
I consider myself fairly active in politics and I have seen a lot in my years. What I heard the other day, I could not have imagined. While conducting an interview with WOBM, Mike Kafton espoused his birthright to be the next mayor of Jackson. I had to check my bearings, as I thought I had been transported to medieval England.
I understand that this is an especially contentious time in Jackson politics. Our first attempt at directly electing the mayor turned sour and is soon to end in a resignation. Now our Township Council president is adding fuel to the fire. Aside from his brazen proclamation that he holds a royal bloodline to the mayor's office, I have seen and heard many of his supporters contend that the position is somehow "owed" to Kafton. How pompous and arrogant can you be?
In council meetings, Kafton has now taken to repeatedly declaring himself the only viable candidate to be the mayor. At the most recent meeting, he demanded that anyone interested in the office should submit a résumé. I'm sure the person who declared himself the only possible candidate will take the time to fairly and impartially review all of these résumés.
As an added bonus, he declared that any candidate should be free of any credit trouble or criminal history. It seems odd that a man with a very public and checkered past should make that particular request.
It seems that Kafton has decided to operate under his own rules, with his own rewards, because we, the people of Jackson, owe him this honor. I think that at this crossroads in our history, the last thing we need is someone so foolish as to believe that he is Jackson royalty.
