      Lower cost of distance learning helps schools
            HOWELL - A group of 18 pupils at the Newbury School recently traveled through outer space without leaving the classroom. They were able to accomplish this challenging feat by using a distance-learning program with NASA called "Planet Hopping.

      County college will not raise tuition next year
            Ocean County College officials have announced that tuition and fees for 2009-10 will not increase. The tuition rate will continue at $92 per credit and student fees will remain the same as last year. The college's Board of Trustees voted to approve President Jon H. Larson's zero-increase tuition recommendation.

      Lakewood to host Senior Citizen Prom
            The Lakewood High School Pupil Assisted Learning Services (PALS) students will host the 10th annual Senior Citizen Prom, with the theme "Moonlight Serenade," 5-9 p.m. March 22. Due to a history of high demand for tickets and limited seating, PALS members will hold a lottery to select attendees.

      Video gives school board a look at students at work
            PLUMSTED — At the most recent regular meeting of the Plumsted School District Board of Education, board members and the public were treated to a presentation given by New Egypt High School Principal Elizabeth Panella. According to school board President Joanna Barlow, Panella showed a video that showed students actively engaged in classes, clubs and sports programs.

      Making a new friend
           Sara McGeehan reacts to the touch of an Australian lizard crawling on her shoulder during the Wildlife Encounters assembly held at the Griebling School, Howell, on Jan. 21. The presentation showcased live animals from Australia and New Zealand and discussed their survival, natural history, behaviors and conservation education.

      High schools are ready to welcome class of '13
            Next week will be quite a milestone in my life and in my son's life. The two of us will be meeting with a guidance counselor from the high school he will be attending next year and choosing the courses he will take as a freshman.

      Jackson Educational Foundation fundraiser Feb. 21
            JACKSON — The third annual fashion show and gift auction luncheon sponsored by the Jackson Educational Foundation is ready to roll. The afternoon of fashion, food and fun will take place on Feb. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at La Bové Grande at Circle Landmark, Route 70, Lakehurst.
