      Warriors hope to shine on baseball diamond
            With a solid group of returning players, the New Egypt High School baseball team is poised to make another run at the NJSIAA state tournament. Only this time around, coach Rich Carroll, now in his 10th season, is hoping for a better result in the postseason.

      Golfers off to good start
            The Howell High School golf team got the 2009 season off to a promising start last week. The Rebels finished second as a team at the season-opening Wall Invitational held April 1 at the Shark River Golf Course, Neptune. Howell and Toms River North each finished with a team score of 322, but the Mariners were credited with the victory on a match of cards.

      Sport Shorts
            The Ocean County College Foundation will hold its eighth annual golf outing at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Lakewood, on May 5. Featuring hole-in-one and "beat the pro" contests, the $275 entry fee per player includes lunch, use of driving range for one hour, greens fee, golf cart, gift, and an awards and cocktail reception after the tournament.

      Sky Blue FC falls to L.A. in opener
            BRIDGEWATER — Women's professional soccer was introduced to New Jersey on Sunday when more than 6,000 fans watched the home team, Sky Blue FC, take on the best women's soccer player in the world.

      Rebels' baseball counting on juniors
            The 2009 Howell High School baseball team will be looking to duplicate last year's run to the state tournament. It won't be easy for the Rebels, who finished 12-12 last spring. Coach Bill Gallacher will rely on a strong junior class to get back to the state tournament, and Howell will try to overcome the graduation of Brian Battaglia and pitcher Mike Fiorillo.

      Flounder action heats up
            Steady winds and April showers made it tough for most people who planned to get in the water this past weekend. Flounder fishing in the Raritan Bay is slowly turning up along with the ocean temperature. The Back Bay is also producing bass with about one out of five being a keeper so far. This is a great sign to kick off the bass season in the bay.

      Rebels open 2009 softball season
            This spring, Coach Laura Savage's Howell High School softball team is looking for senior leadership from Alicia Appell (first base), Gabriella Cicciarelli (catcher) and Michele Piscitelli (third base/outfield) to set the example for a youthful squad.
