      Race proceeds to benefit police K-9 Unit
            HOWELL — A new police dog may eventually be added to the Howell Police Department's K-9 Unit after 60 walkers and runners showed their support for the unit during the first Run for Rover on June 14. The fundraiser featured a 5-mile run and a 1-mile children's fun run.

      Luby Britt fishing tourney set for July 12
            The 13th annual Luby Britt Memorial Fishing Tournament for children age 13 and under will be held 9-11 a.m. July 12 at Oakford Lake Park, New Egypt. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. The event is sponsored by the New Egypt Elks. Prizes will be awarded. Participants should bring their own bait and tackle.       Strand to host theater workshop for youths
            The Strand Theater, Lakewood, will host a summer youth theater camp for students between the ages of 7 and 18. The Strand Theater Summer Workshop will feature daily activities for students and include specialized games and lessons that focus on teamwork, creative movement, vocal techniques and acting.

      Jackson Food Pantry receives donation
            The Jackson Democratic Club presented $500 to the Jackson Women of Today to be used for the Jackson Food Pantry. According to Democratic Club President Kevin DiGesu, the money was raised during a recent Comedy Club Night held at the Jackson Elks Lodge.

      Local bands offered chance to play Ratfest
            The WRAT (95.9), a Greater Media radio station, is giving local bands the chance to play in front of thousands at the Coors Lightsponsored 2009 Ratfest, slated for the PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, on Aug. 18.             FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Red, white and blue will be the colors of the evening at the Freehold Township Day, A Concert and Movie in the Park, to be held from 5-11 p.m. July 11 at Michael J.       Jackson tea party set for July 4
            JACKSON — All citizens are being invited to John F. Johnson Jr. Memorial Park in Jackson for a July 4 "Don't Tread on Me" tea party. According to a press release from the Jackson Tea Party, the rally will take place at the park on Kierych Memorial Drive, just south of South Cooks Bridge Road, from noon to 3 p.m.

            • Independence Day will be celebrated in Lakewood on July 2 with a band concert and fireworks. The Lakewood municipal band and chorus will start the celebration with a concert at 8 p.m. at the amphitheater near Lake Carasaljo, which is near Route 9 south in Lakewood. A fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. and can be viewed either from North or South Lake Drive.
