The New Egypt Hurricanes, a U12 boys travel soccer team, captured the U12 boys championship title at the 2009 Beach Blast on the beach in Wildwood on June 28. More than 900 teams participated in the weekend tournament. Leading the scoring for the squad from Plumsted were Raphael Archer and Gavin Pritchard with four goals apiece over the four-game series, with additional scoring by Matt Talalaj and Vinnie Masitti. Strong offensive support was provided by Camren Allen and Brett Van Tassel, with stellar defensive efforts by Jordan Rugo, Kevin Carduner and Gage Chumney. Kenny Johnston was the team MVP in goal. More ... In the heat of the summer, the Jackson Memorial High School girls soccer team has started to prepare for the afternoons when they will be in action this fall. Coach Drew Gibson's team went 9-9 in 2008 and lost several significant players to graduation in June. More ... Al Soden of Howell aims his arrow toward the target on the practice course at the Black Knight Bowbenders archery club on Perrineville Road in Jackson on July 9. The athletic facilities at Brookdale Community College, Monmouth County's community college, are undergoing a face-lift. In addition to upgrading the Robert J. Collins Arena on the Lincroft campus, Brookdale is expanding the arena complex to include a community-based fitness center and a 1,500-seat gymnasium. More ... With stiff wind and sea conditions, Capt. Birch aboard Fish Guts Charters, Seaside Park, felt the ocean was not an option. Capt.
