Kafton, for mayor, and Tilis, for council,
announce candidacy in Jackson
JACKSON — Township Council President Mike Kafton and Township Councilman Howard Tilis have announced their candidacy for mayor and councilman, respectively.
Because of resignations and appointments that occurred in Jackson’s local government within the past year, residents will go to the polls in November to vote on these two municipal races.
Under Jackson’s nonpartisan form of government, the municipal election is regularly held in May.
The term of mayor that Kafton is running for will be from November through June 30, 2010.
The council term Tilis is running for will be through 2012.
In a statement, Kafton said, “Jackson, more than ever, needs a strong leader to guide it through these very difficult times, and I strongly feel I am the person who can successfully accomplish this. I have the experience and have consistently demonstrated my ability to lead.”
If Kafton loses the November election for mayor, he will remain on the Township Council.
Tilis said, “I am honored to be running with Mike Kafton. I have had firsthand experience working with him and I am impressed with what I have seen. I am confident that, together, we can make a difference to all Jackson residents as we move ahead.”
Tilis, if elected in November, will complete a council term which runs through June 30, 2012.
Tilis was appointed to the council when Michael Reina, who was serving on the council, was named Jackson’s mayor following the resignation of Mark Seda from the mayor’s post.
No other candidates have announced their intention to run in November.
