      Kafton & Tilis will run in Nov.
            JACKSON — Township Council President Mike Kafton and Township Councilman Howard Tilis have announced their candidacy for mayor and councilman, respectively. Because of resignations and appointments that occurred in Jackson's local government within the past year, residents will go to the polls in November to vote on these two municipal races.

      Howell resident awarded scholarship
            This past June the New Jersey Metro Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored Alyssa Rorke of Howell during its annual scholarship awards ceremony. This year the chapter awarded scholarships to 62 area students, distributing a total of $64,000. One of those deserving students was Rorke, who will attend Rutgers University in the fall.

      Church youth group will go on mission
            JACKSON — Counselors and a dozen youths from the DeBows United Methodist Church will soon be heading out on another mission trip. "At the end of July they will be traveling to Branford, Conn., to join with 350 other youths and counselors in a home repair project," said Betty Gibbons, pastor.

            HOWELL — The Howell Municipal Alliance/ Howell Police Athletic League will be offering a limited number of internships for the fall and winter semesters. The Howell alliance will also have membership positions open as of Jan. 1.

      Picnic and poker run will benefit children
            JACKSON — A picnic and poker run to benefit special-needs children will be hosted by the Jackson Elks at their lodge, 1059 E. Veterans Highway, Jackson, on Aug. 22. Sign-up for the poker run will begin at 10 a.m. The picnic will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. The donation for the picnic is $20 per person, and will be free for children under age 12.

      National Night Out event returns to Jackson Aug. 4
            JACKSON — The Jackson Police Department will once again participate in National Night Out. The event, which is also known as America's Night Out Against Crime, is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Jackson ShopRite shopping center on North County Line Road near Cook Road.

      Visual arts poster contest winner named
            Caitlin Campbell of Brick Township was a third-place winner in the statewide "Volunteer — Make a Difference in Your Community" contest, sponsored by the Knights of Pythias, an international, non-sectarian fraternal order. Caitlin attends the Marine Academy of Science and Technology high school, located in Sandy Hook.

      Vendors sought for Senior Expo in Sept.
            The Jackson Senior Center, 45 Don Connor Blvd., will host a Senior Expo on Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year's Senior Expo had 500 seniors in attendance and 50 vendors. Transportation can be provided for seniors who do not drive. Door prizes will be given out hourly. Vendors are needed. Call 732-928-1200, ext. 243, to register for a table.
