Kristen Coyne, Rudolph Maag and Gary Finnigan Jr. are the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association's 2009-10 scholarship winners. They were chosen by the SBOANJ Scholarship Committee based on their academic standing, community service, financial need as well as eligibility. The award is limited to students who are active in harness racing or the children of parents active in the sport.
Coyne, the daughter of Ronald and Regina Coyne of New Egypt, won the top award of $5,000. She will be starting her college studies at Rowan University in the fall and hopes to be a history teacher.
Maag and Finnigan each received $2,500. Maag is the son of Meadowlands stall man Rudy and Leonila Maag of Old Bridge. He starts at Rutgers University in the fall. Finnigan is the son of trainer Gary and Marty Finnigan of Wall. He's a dean's list student majoring in history and is entering his senior year at Rowan.
This year's scholarship recipients will receive their check in the winner's circle at the Meadowlands on July 31.
Howell hockey, a recreational roller hockey program for boys and girls from Howell and the surrounding areas, will hold in-person registration 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 6 and Aug. 12 and 9-11 a.m. Aug. 15. All games are played outside on full-size rinks at Deerwood Park, Howell. Registration fees include a personalized jersey and 10 games, followed by playoffs. The program is open to new and experienced players in all age groups, and everyone plays.
