      Catcher coming back with a bang
      New Egypt's Mike Fassl, returning from knee injury, wins home run derby
            Mike Fassl, who is about to start his senior year at New Egypt High School, Plumsted, snapped out of his quiet, injury-marred junior year with a bang last month when he won the Eastern League All-Star Game Home Run Derby. The Eastern League All-Star Game was hosted by the Trenton Thunder at Waterfront Park, Trenton, on July 15.

      Gillon is a girl on the go for Jackson track team
            Tylia Gillon, who is coming off a sensational junior year as a sprinter for the Jackson Memorial High School girls track and field team, is looking for an even bigger year as a senior after qualifying for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions during her first three years in high school.

           Manasquan held its annual Mako Shark Tournament on June 26-28. Team Mako Marons competed with 236 boats and landed a 368-pound mako on the first day of the tournament. It is the biggest fish that has been seen at the scales during the tournament in 15 years. When the tournament ended, the 368-pound guppy held out for top prize. The second-place fish was a 148-pound mako. Proud Plumsted natives are (l-r) Capt. Mike Hathazi, Kenny Svolto, Ryan Fahey and Shawn Burns.

      Sport Shorts
            Independent Superstars of Wrestling will present the "War to Settle the Score" at 3-2 Count Athletic Training Facility, Fairfield Road, Howell, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. This event, which features Judas Young and Danny Inferno, is a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Young and Inferno will be in the main event, a 60-minute ironman match.

      Boca U23 women capture MSSL Cup
      Jackson Memorial grads contribute to team's success
            In only their third season together, the Jersey Shore Boca U23 women's soccer team notched itself a place in the record books. On July 26 at the Friendship Field Complex in Bordentown, they concluded a strong summer together with a 1-0 win over the Middlepath Soccer Club from New York and captured the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase League (MSSL) Cup.

      Freehold Raceway opens harness meet
      First leg of Triple Crown, the Cane Pace, will be held at track Labor Day, Sept. 7
            The familiar call of "Here they come, there they go" has returned to Freehold Raceway, Route 9, Freehold. The venerable harness track reopened with live harness racing on Aug. 12. Post time Wednesday through Saturday is 12:30 p.m.
