Jaguars seek return to state grid playoffs

      Qualifying for the NJSIAA state playoffs was customary for the Jackson Memorial High School football team until the 2008 season came along. The Jaguars did not qualify for the state playoffs for the first time in a decade and suffered through a 3-7 season.

Special event at speedway Oct. 24
      Wall Stadium promoter Jim Morton has announced a change in format for the upcoming Tommy Comerford Memorial set for Oct. 24. Instead of the originally announced 150- lap distance, race organizers have decided to present two 66-lap main events offering each winner a $6,600 payday.

      In a vintage performance worthy of the great champions of the past, Vintage Master won the 55th Cane Pace on Labor Day, Sept. 7, at Freehold Raceway, Freehold. In joining such greats as Bret Hanover, Albatross and Niatross, who are all previous winners of the Cane Pace, Vintage Master was masterful.

Sport Shorts
      Tryouts will be held for boys and girls by Jackson Travel Basketball. Teams play in the Mid-Monmouth League. All tryouts will be held at the Holman School gymnasium. Sept. 21 and Sept. 23, Junior Boys (grades 5-6) from 6-7:30 p.m. and Senior Boys (grades 7-8) from 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 22 and Sept. 24, Junior Girls (grades 5-6) from 6-7:30 p.m.

Rebels impressive in season opener

      The last time the Howell High School football team played at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, in 2007, the Rebels won a state gridiron championship. Although the stakes were not as high on the morning of Sept. 13, the 2009 Rebels left the Rutgers Stadium turf with an impressive 26-14 victory over state power Piscataway High School in their season opener.

      Called the most highly anticipated charitable golf and entertainment event in central New Jersey, the Sovereign Bank Charity Golf Classic returns on Oct. 5- 6. The event, held at Forsgate Country Club, Monroe Township, raises funds for the nonprofit Forsgate Foundation, which supports causes throughout New Jersey.
