Candidates' words and actions tell different stories in Jackson

This letter is in response to an article that appeared in the July 30, 2009, issue of the Tri-Town News. I noticed the dazzling article praising Jackson Township Council President Mike Kafton and his running mate, Howard Tilis.

Mr. Kafton stated, "Jackson, more than ever, needs a strong leader to guide it through these very difficult times."

I'm not sure the youth of Jackson are ready for an official who faced drug and DWI charges ("OfficialVows to Fight Drug and DWI Charges," Tri-Town News, June 30, 2005).

He and Mr. Tilis commend Jackson's "nonpartisan form of government," yet their recent votes on appointments to the zoning board show a very partisan slant.

In Mr. Kafton's own press release dated June 24, 2009, he states, "Despite some political outcry at the meeting, the majority of council is proud of our appointments to the zoning board, which cut across political party lines and now puts the zoning board on equal footing with three Democrats, three Republicans and three independents."

If he understands the true meaning of "nonpartisan," why would he reference "Democrats, Republicans and independents?"

Shouldn't those receiving appointments be the most qualified people?

Mr. Kafton and Mr. Tilis may make political speeches that "sound" good to the public, but we see their voices and actions tell a much different story.
