      Young players give Lions hope for wins
            Jackson Liberty High School boys soccer coach Paul Baker said he is "cautiously optimistic" about the 2009 season despite his team's slow start. "Coaches tell me after games, 'You're here' or 'Your team has arrived' because we are competitive, but it's not that way until we start winning," said Baker, whose team recently lost, 3-2, to highly regarded Manchester.

      Lions to meet Barnegat
            After cruising to a 55-6 victory over Lakewood in which Matt Filosa became Jackson Liberty High School's first 100-yard rusher in a game, with 198 yards and four touchdowns, the Lions were brought down to earth with a thud when they lost to Middletown South, 38-0.

      Lions' harriers off to good start in '09
            Jackson Liberty High School's girls and boys cross country teams have won their first four meets for the second straight year, but their big test will come this week. Both squads are entered in the Shore Coaches Meet to be held on Oct. 3 at Holmdel Park's challenging 3.1-mile course.

            The Jackson Department of Recreation and Senior Services is accepting registrations for the 2009-10 winter basketball program for boys and girls ages 7-17, which begins Jan. 2, 2010. Register from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Jackson Recreation Department, Don Connor Boulevard. Proof of age is required to register. Fee is $50.
