      Lions still shooting for grid playoffs
            In only its fourth season, the Jackson Liberty High School football team goes into the final three games before the qualifying cutoff date still in contention for an NJSIAA state playoff berth.             The Howell High School girls cross country team put the finishing touches on its undefeated dual-meet season as the Rebels outran previously undefeated Middletown South, 17-38, and Middletown North, 15-50, at Holmdel Park, Holmdel, on Oct. 13 to wrap up the Shore Conference A North Division title.

            Quarterback Brian Hamilton, like the other players on the New Egypt High School football team, has experienced what coach Luke Sinkhorn calls "growing pains," but has shown signs of coming of age along the way. "We started off kind of shaky, but throughout the season we are coming together as a team," said Hamilton.

            Howell's David Hayes is the leading rusher for the University of Delaware football team. Hayes has rushed for 316 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry for the Blue Hens. He has caught 10 passes for 81 yards through six games. Hayes, a Howell High School graduate, made the Blue Hens squad as a walkon.
