New Egypt Day brings family fun
PLUMSTED — The fish will be jumping on May 15at the annual New Egypt Day festival, and attendees are encouraged to bring their fishing poles to Oakford Lake, which has been stocked with brown trout, large mouth bass, catfish and sunnies by Big Woods Nursery — just in time for the festival.
The trout are tagged and, if caught, can be brought to Big Woods Nursery, 227 Brynmore Road, New Egypt, to be exchanged for a prize.
In addition to fishing at the lake, paddle boat rides will be available that day. New Egypt Day festivities will be split between Oakford Lake Park and the Presbyterian Church grounds on Front Street. A scenic pedestrian bridge over the lake links the two sites.
Sponsored by Main Street New Egypt and Plumsted Township, the annual New Egypt Day festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15. The afternoon will feature live music, food, rides, games and activities, including free fitness on wheels for children ages 2-7, courtesy of The Fun Bus, free face painting, pony rides, inflatable rides and a giant swing.
Music will be provided throughout the day by New Jersey’s own Michael Patrick and the Suburban Hillbillies. Carefully blending elements of traditional country, 1950s-style rockabilly, folk and roots rock with a “classic rockin’ edge,” this group has devised a style that appeals to people of all ages.
In recent years the group and its members have shared the stage with Randy Travis, the Outlaws, the Marshall Tucker Band, David Allen Coe, Gary Alan, Rosanne Cash, Marty Stewart, Carlene Carter and many more.
The New Egypt Day festival will feature an array of things to see, from Civil War displays by the 2nd Texas Cavalry, to boat rides on Oakford Lake, and many things in between. Rock Workshop students of the Sweet Music Academy will perform in the gazebo from 3-4 p.m.
Festival attendees are asked to support the community and bring a nonperishable food donation to the Helping Hands Pantry table, which will be in the Presbyterian Church parking lot.
