Freehold Regional board OKs deal with unions

Contracts for separate bargaining units in the Freehold Regional High School District (FRHSD) got the stamp of approval during the FRHSD Board of Education’s June 28 meeting. The agreements are between the FRHSD and the academic supervisors association, and between the FRHSD and the custodial and maintenance association.

The board’s attorney, Lawrence Schwartz, said that under the supervisors’ agreement, the union received a raise of 2.99 percent in its total salary line from the 2008-09 to the 2009-10 school year. That line item will not be increased for the 2010- 11 school year.

Members of the supervisors association will pay 1.5 percent of their salary toward the cost of their health benefits starting with the 2010-11 contract.

Voting yes to approve the contract were board President Ronald Lawson of Howell, Vice President Heshy Moses of Freehold Borough, Elizabeth Canario of Englishtown, Christopher Placitella of Colts Neck and Jennifer Sutera of Manalapan.

Marlboro representative Barry Hochberg voted no and said that while he had served on the negotiations committee for the agreement, he believed the district could have gotten a better deal.

Schwartz said the custodial and maintenance association agreement included a 3.5 percent salary line increase for 2009-10, a 3.8 percent salary line increase for 2010-11 and a 3.9 percent salary line increase in 2011-12.

Members of the custodial and maintenance association will also begin paying 1.5 percent of their salary toward the cost of their health benefits.

Schwartz said the members of this unit typically start out at a lower salary range than the district’s other bargaining units.

Voting to approve the contract were Lawson, Moses, Canario, Hochberg and Placitella.

Sutera voted no on the agreement with the custodial and maintenance association.

Lawson thanked the individuals who served on the negotiations committees for their hard work in securing “pretty good deals” for the district with the bargaining units.

The negotiations committee for the academic supervisors association agreement was Tom Caiazza of Freehold Township, Kathie Lavin of Farmingdale and Hochberg.

The negotiations committee for the custodial and maintenance association was Bill Bruno of Howell, Caiazza and Hochberg.

Caiazza and Bruno were absent from the June 28 board meeting.
