Chorus welcomes women to rehearsal

Women who love to sing are invited to visit a rehearsal of the Liberty Oak Chorus held at the Freehold Jewish Center, Broad Street, Freehold.

In a press release, the chorus members said they attribute their continued success to the skill and tenacity of Master Director Katie Blackwood. In the five years that she has been directing, the chorus has grown, with several awards to show for its efforts.

In 2008 and 2009, Liberty Oak has scored second place overall, and in 2010 the chorus won a “wildcard” status in the international organization and will be competing on the international stage in Seattle, Wash., in October with the best choruses worldwide.

Blackwood and the chorus members are working to meet the challenge of continued improvement in perfecting the barbershop style of performance, according to the press release.

Blackwood has been a barbershopper since 1991 and grew up as a “barbershop brat.” She has been a six-time international quartet competitor and a five-time Region 15 champion. Blackwood sings lead in the Region 15 quartet Impulse.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Blackwood majored in theater and music, and worked in the professional theater for many years.
