MOMS Club: Supply drive was a success

JACKSON — The MOMS Club of Jackson completed its ninth annual Back to School Drive on Aug. 25. More than 70 backpacks were donated to the Jackson Food Pantry to benefit local children, ranging from prekindergarten through high school. Each backpack was filled a lunch cooler and school supplies such as notebooks, binders, folders, scissors, markers and rulers.

“This is a special service project for our MOMS Club,” said Coleen Walter, service project coordinator for the MOMS Club. “Since we are all moms, we know the value of education and we want every child to have the tools they need to succeed.”

The club relies on the generosity of the community and its members to make the drive as successful as it has been for so many years, according to a press release.

Donation bins were placed around Jackson to allow members of the community to make donations. The bins were placed at Farley’s Ice Cream, Jackson Fitness Center, Jackson Library, Supergym, Jackson Academy of Tae Kwon Do, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church and Intrinsic Chiropractic Center.

The Knights of Columbus, Coposky Contracting, West Side Dance, Explore and Learn Nursery School, Pump It Up in Freehold, Cassville Nursery School and ShopRite of Jackson also made monetary donations. These donations allowed the MOMS Club to purchase additional backpacks, lunch bags and supplies still needed, according to the press release.

The club also received a donation of supplies from the Brandeis Club of the Westlake adult community, including numerous backpacks and more than 100 composition notebooks.

Another special donation received was from an 8-year-old Jackson boy, Anthony Scalera. He made a large donation of supplies including spiral notebooks, crayons, glue, pens and pencils. Anthony saved his lunch money change during the previous school year and used the money to purchase the supplies he donated.

Girl Scout Troop 510 also rallied together to donate 10 backpacks filled with supplies. All of these contributed to the success of the Back to School Drive, according to the MOMS Club.
